Verrucas - any ideas

Recommended Posts

Banana skin didn't work for me. :( I think if you have had one for a while, it goes quite deep and then is much harder to get rid of - if you can catch them before they bed in they are easier to get rid of. Agree the over the counter freezer treatments are useless for most verrucas. Tea tree oil, good old salycic (sp?) acid and time worked for me - allowing the gel to build up to a good crust so that when peeled off a good amount of the verruca came with it.... :vom:

:vom: sorry not something I have had any experience of you all have my sympathy though :!:

I had a similar problem, a verrucca for several years, that showed no signs of going no matter what I used. I am lucky enough to have an excellent chiropodist nearby who is trying pioneering treatment for them.

According to my Chiropodist, the belief that you become immune to the virus that causes verruccas is only partly true. As the Verrucca lives in the uppermost layers of your skin, most of which are dead, the virus often does not come into contact with the bloodvessels supplying the live skin beneath, and therefore does not come into contact with the virus-fighting cells.

The over the counter freezing products available do not freeze to nearly a low enough temperature for deep seated verruccas, and will only get rid of fairly new shallow ones. He froze off/s"Ooops, word censored!"ed my verrucca over 2 or 3 visits and eradicated it completely, but since that time he is now part of a trial in which they pass a needle through the verrucca and deeper into your foot to create a channel into the deeper tissue to allow your immune system access to the verrucca. Early results seem promising and apparently after this treatment you will have permenant immunity and never get verruccas again.

Personally I would try a different chiropodist! Or if you chiropodist would like details of the trial, I could supply you with his details.

Thought I'd see if anyone had any success with old veruccas over the last few months - I tried garlic (a bit half-heartedly I must admit) but with no joy.

I keep hearing about banana skin, but I'm not too keen on bananas - does anyone know if you can keep bits of skin in a freezer to use as I don't want to waste bananas by keep using them just for their skins ?

I've just read this with interest as my son has 1 on his right foot and about 12 on his left, they go in a circle round the ball of his foot. He also has a lovely collection of warts, mostly on his knee but a few on his hands  he really hates them and won't wear shorts at all no matter how hot he gets. He's had the freezing treatment from the nurse which made no difference whatsoever! So I'm deciding between thuja this? or lemon oil this? Is it just pure lemon oil? I don't want to buy the wrong one!

You will see from the post above that I swear by banana skin, however my son now has a hideous verruca in the most in accessible place where I can't put banana skin- the crease underneath your toe joint. I took him to the Dr as it was so weird looking I didn't know what it was.

Anyway GP confirmed that it is a verucca and recommended that we apply 100% pure tea tree oil religiously twice a day, plus after daily bath file it with a stone or nail file. We are a couple of weeks into this process and I am really amazed at the progress, he said it could takes months. He pointed out that tea tree oil is anti fungal and anti bacterial and thats to do with why it works.

Hope that helps

I was thinking over the weekend how long ago it was I started the various treatment suggestions

So far I have

Used the banana skin treatment for about 6 weeks (banana skin on overnight for a couple of weeks and then with added tea tree in the daytime

Combination of tea tree and lemon oil (one overnight and one daytime) for 3 weeks

Now on just lemon oil as that seems to do more good

The banana skin seemed to be doing something - it opened up the verruca and exposed the black roots and then nothing else seemed to happen. The lemon oil brought more roots to the surface and I now have hard white centres to the 2 verrucas. They don't hurt any more and there seems to be no more black roots so I don't know if they are now dead?

Bit scared to stop using the oil in case they come back!

I think any lemon oil is OK Chickvic as long as it is pure oil

Hi

I have had warts and veruccas but not for many years.Quite right they are a virus and after a few years will burn(sorry) itself out. Unfortunately most people dont want to wait a few years. I had mine frozen off at the dermatology dept as an outpatient which doesnt hurt only there a couple of minutes and they use a cotton bud, dab it on and done. But they then hurt a few hours after and are very sore and can blister but this was the only way to zap them. But its only a couple of days. However I have also used successfully gel but cover with a plaster as its quite nasty stuff and will burn good skin too. Usually you just put a bit onto the verucca only.

Yes you should keep them covered in a swimming pool and this is where most people will unfortunately pick them up, hence common in children

Good luck your GP should be able to sort it for you if they are that problematic

Donald

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier :!: A child at a school I once worked at had slices of garlic taped to a persistent verruca I did think this was weird & I have to admit I laugh as I type. However when Hazel had a verruca which wouldn't shift I did try it & the verruca vanished :!: Strange but true :D Alli xx

He can't take tablets, he just can't swallow them. The trouble is they're in such an awkward place, right round the ball of his foot so plasters just won't stay in place. If I buy the cream I assume I just cover the warts/verrucae with it, do I have to cover them afterwards? Or with the oil, do I dab it on and leave it to dry?

You don't swallow them :) Pop one into a clean mouth (ie not after eating, cleaning teeth or having a drink) and let it dissolve under the tongue which it does in a very short time. You also don't handle the tablets. Pop one into the lid and then drop it into the mouth. They are also very small.

Might be worth looking at then. How long do they take to work? He's getting pretty desperate!

From DD's experience I think she was on the Thuja 6c for three weeks, one pill twice a day. It looked as if nothing was happening but then they just disappeared.

It is a few years since my youngest daughter suffered from persistent verrucas, but the only thing that worked on them at the time was the over the counter freezing method (as long as you leave it on for the full time). I wish I'd known about the garlic, and lemon oil

On a slightly different topic - at a similar age (about 8 years old) she kept coming home with head lice. That was an awful summer!! Tried the pharmacy remedies but the darn things were too persistent and used to the chemicals....so I took a step back and resorted to what must have been used in 'the olden days'....vinegar! Loads and loads of it every few days before I washed their hair - it worked too! ;)

Right the thuja 6c didn't work :( we've just ordered some lemon oil, do I dab this on neat and leave it to dry or does it need covering up? Does it need diluting? Could he take thuja 6c and dab with lemon oil? He's getting really fed up and telling him they will go eventually is not really helping!

Well mine is still going strong after trying any number of things! Now had it for 5 or 6 years I think. Using the lemon oil/tea tree oil has definitely made a difference as it is no longer painful but it has cost me a fortune in plasters.

Yes, dab the lemon oil on neat and cover it over. Best of luck

the entire ball of my foot was coated in verrucas for about 3 years, and then I got warts on my big toes (in front of the nail, which got very gruesome as my toenails grew) and warts on my little toes.

I got so fed up with not being able to wear open shoes in summer I ended up filing them a lot and using a metal nail file to pick out the centres of the verrucas - they disappeared soon after and touch wood, I've not had them back for about 6 years!

Spooky, I was only thinking last night that I might see if anyone had had any success over the past couple of months...

I tried Thuja to no avail and have also been using lemon oil (and filing off the dead skin) with also no success. I think after over 30 years I may be stuck with it for life (in fact, whilst using Thuja an extra wart appeared on my thumb).

Still not really tried banana skin as we don't eat enough bananas.

I've just been to the docs this morning regarding a 'thing' that has appeared on my cheek. It's been there several months and suspected it was a wart or maybe a skin tag or a funny mole. Been told it's possibly a wart. Nice eh? Feel like a witch or something now! Anyway, the only thing he could advise (As any man made methods would leave a scar - if they go on their own scarring is less likely) is covering it in clear nail varnish. Apparently starving it of oxygen. Could take weeks though and as it's on my face it's not going to look great so I may just try tea tree oil/lemon oil and see how i go.

As it's the same virus (ish) as verrucas maybe this could work for you guys? That's the same reasoning behind the duct tape (Although he said the glue in the duct tape is sulphur based so has useful properties too) whereas I thought maybe the duct tape remedy was a light preventative thing, not an oxygen thing.

Anyway, worth a try
