millymollymandy
Help one of my two cats has started weeing outside the litter tray and i don't know why. Just noticed when I was sitting on the sofa that one of the cats has had a wee on my leather sofa . It has happened a few times on the carpet in the living room and I have been trying to clear it up as if my OH works it out he will try to get rid of the cats. They have a litter tray but no cat flap so I let them in out when they want and have done for the past 2 years with no problem. We were away this weekend and they were in but that is a regular occurance. what could have changed so that they are doing this? Thay seem fine but we have new sofas coming in a few weeks and if one of the cats pees on the new sofa there will be a big row. Anyone had this before as I need to stop it urgently
Guest
Cats pee in inappropriate places for different reasons, if its the same cat it could be a UTI, cystitis or stress. Feliway can help deal with peeing outwith the litter box. You can get Feliway much cheaper from www.nutrecare.co.uk than at the vets, for cats the plug in is generally more effective than the spray. Putting tinfoil down where they have been peeing will put them off as they hate the noise, also placing dry food near the area helps, as they wont urinate around their food. It's advisable with cats to make sure there is no medical reason for the peeing. Hope this helps.
mollyripkim
My daughter had this problem with her two Siamese recently, by trial and error she found it happened when had completely cleaned and disinfected the litter trays so now she keeps a bit of the old litter to put back in the cleaned trays. Friend gave her some spray which smells of lavender which is supposed to put them off but in her case it was the litter trays. Good luck though. Chucky Mama
If they are peeing in the same place they may be urine marking. If you clean up urine with strong smelling disinfectants it can actually encourage them to feel the need to compete with the smell and 'over spray' the area. Some cats can be encourage to use litter trays if they are filled with garden soil, peat or soil from cheap growbags. Feliway is useful in creating a 'calm' environment. If you are getting a new sofa I would strongly suggest that you get a Feliway Diffuser plugged in before it arrives (ideally 7-10 days before). Just the arrival of the sofa cause stress them enough to restart the marking. The best thing to use to clean up urine is Simple Solution which removed the stain and smell effectively without leaving a strong smell. Good Luck!!
Yorkshire Pudding
Do get the offender checked out at the vet's - you don't say how old they are but a sudden change in wee habits can indicate a UTI or diabetes. I had a similar situation with my previous cat and got her checked out on advice from this forum - she was diabetic and needed a special diet. I will vouch for Simple Solution - it's enzyme based and very effective at removing all the smell. Nothing else deters them from returning to the same place. millymollymandy
Thanks for the help think i will nip to petsathome and get some simple solution if they have it. I think it will be the litter tray as it is quite old and no matter how much i clean it lately it still whiffs so hopefully a new one should help fingers crossed
chickencam
We have a litter tray with a lid that contains smell and mess pretty well. I would say the same as the others get it checked out and buy some Simple Solution.
Eggasperated
One of my cats did this when he had a bladder infection - he peed on the sofa, in the dogs bed and even in my handbag once . A trip to the vets and some anti-biotics sorted him out really quickly. If it is an infection then getting rid of the smell of pee won't make any difference, my cat got very distressed when he had his infection so I would really recommend a trip to the vet, although it seems like a lot of money it can be even more costly to have a sofa ruined. Aunty e
Can you install a catflap? It really does help with inappropriate weeing. Otherwise a vet check up is always a good idea if it's new behaviour.
