Alis girls
As you know my cat has had an operation and is home but now his sister is rejecting him. She walks away and wont go near him. He does look a bit funny - half shaved and poodle like but he must smell like himself. is this normal. Worried kitty mum.
Chucky Mama
He will smell strange from the anaesthetic and the different bits and bobs used to scrub up the surgical site. His breath may also smell strange to her from the antibiotics. I would be a good idea for both of them to use a Feliway plug in. It will help keep the stress levels down in the house. Alis girls
Thanks - we did wonder if he smelt different. he does look different and is not happy being confined to an albeit big room. Have you ever tried to watch TV with a cat pacing backwards and forwards over your body I will invest in the plug in thingy - might calm me down too. He got in the kitchen today and walked all over my eggs in the egg holder - didnt smash any. Thanks for replying CM - i am very grateful for any advice
Chucky Mama
He will need close confinement as his leg will be being held together with bits of wire/pins or screws. If he jumps on and off surfaces he will jolt the edges of the bones each time and could bend or dislodge the metal work It will be a pain keeping him quiet but it is better than having more surgery
Alis girls
Jumping on and off things - he doesnt stop - we did tell the vet but he said it wouldnt matter - I think the top of the ball joint has been taken off as badly damaged and its fitted in in a different way to normal - I havent explained it very well. My OH did tell vet Sandy would be jumping on things and he said it was good physio! Anyway I will get the plug in thing today. Chucky Mama
Ah, if he has had his femoral head removed it wont matter too much. He has basically had the ball bit of his femur taken off. It will form a false joint. They are usually heal pretty quickly.
Alis girls
Got plug in thing - he seems less stressed - we sat and watched Doctors together and YS is watching Friends with him. The thing is hes settled if we are there. I had to work so left him with capital radio for company. His sister hissed at him today - so nothing new there. Alis girls
UPDATE Well 2 and a half weeks as an indoor cat and hes coping well. He removed his own sutures which amused the vet and the vet is very happy with his progress. His fur is now growing back and feels like suede - lovely and soft - hes enjoying the attention as any body who calls coos " ooh poor boy" and he gets lots of fuss. Typical male
Couperwife
aww, glad he is feeling better. Piperkit removed her stitches too (and on our bed ) when I was little we had a cat that had a toe removed for years afterwards if he wanted anything, or someone went "poorly paw" he would lift his paw up and look sorry for himself - must be a boy thing (sorry ) cathy x

Lavenders_Blue
My parents have told me the story many times of a family dog from years ago (my grandparents dog, I think) who, on one occasion became mildly unwell and was given a nip of brandy to try and perk him up. This happened for several evenings until it became apparent that the dog had, in fact, developed rather a taste for it. After a week or so, the dog was quite clearly well again, but would mysteriously come over all faint after tea... until he got his drop of brandy! (And yes, another male animal!)
