One left :(

Recommended Posts

As of this morning I only have one lady left. We have lost 2 over the last few months, which we knew was likely as they were all getting on a bit, and as ex farm birds they weren't in the best of health when we got them 2 years ago. I don't like her being on her own, but hubby says no more chooks until she's gone and then he wants to move things around in the garden. I'll be letting her run about the garden with the bunny most days, but I feel so sorry for her all on her own :(

Sorry to hear that :( We lost our hen Rosie last week and lost one of our others about 6 months ago. So then Matilda was on her own. We've just added 3 newbies on the weekend. There has been a bit of pecking going on but even now on day 3 it's been getting better and what's more I've now got the gorgeous Silkie I've always wanted! :D Good luck in whatever you decide but your hen would be better of with some friends.

You may find that your hen teams up with your bunny rab. I know that my aunt inherited an ex-bat on the death of her aunt (my great aunt) and the ex-bat teamed up with a large white rabbit that she had. They always went everywhere together. Later on they were joined by an elderly rescue tabby cat and then the three stuck together all the time. They made a sweet if odd trio. :)

I too am sorry to hear about your lonesome girl :( and hope your OH will change his mind  . Surely one little lady won't stop him from "moving things around in the garden".

As Cheaky Chook says though, may be she will team up with your bunny :D .

On a positive note, I did know of a hen that was the only survivor of a fox attack and she lived on her own FR constantly and just looked after herself. She didn't belong to anyone and she used to roost unbelievably high in a tree at night  . This little lady managed three years on her own :D .

Would you consider rehoming her and, if so, do you know anyone with hens who might be able to offer her a home? I took on a lone hen a couple of years ago, and although it was very sad for her original owners I'm sure it was the right thing to do - and Henny Penny had a very happy 2 years here with my little flock.

I would if there was someone near by who could take her, but not very likely. I'm hoping that she'll be happy enough with Custard (my bunny) as company during the day, they have always FR together anyway with no friction, so perhaps they'll buddy up now :)

And henslaved, his idea of 'moving things around' is digging up the area where the shed and run is atm and resituating it, rebuilding it and all sort of other wonderful ideas  It's not going to be a short term project once it starts I'm afraid. He's willing to put it off until Chookies time comes but that's it.

If I lived nearby, I would take her for you as I too have a lone hen (although she has two nutty guinea fowl for company). She could come for a super long holiday till your OH finishes the 'moving things around' :D .

The new shed and run does sound exciting.
