brizee
Evening everyone, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can create a small (probably very small) income from my chicks. Does anyone have any experience of selling their eggs to the local community and any other by product of owning chickens. I've far to many eggs to eat and lots of chicken poo . Really just looking for suggestions so everyone can experience beautiful fresh eggs and create a cottage industry. I'm not planning to take over the world yet as only got four birds. brizee
thats a good idea, but the outlay for the consumables does not warrant the return. in other words, it costs more to make than to sell. sorry been watching dragons den
Plum
Well then, use the shells when you have blown the contents to make cakes to sell to decorate and sell as Faberge eggs . I've sold eggs at past at work but only in a small way for £1 for 4. Didn't make a fortune but it did help towards the cost of feed, medicines etc., There are quite a few forumers who sell their eggs but think you will need some more chickens
Sam
I also have 4 chickens (hybrids) so get alot of eggs - I think its been 4 a day for about 3 weeks now!! I just sell them to friends and family (6 for a pound) I've made about £12 so far hehe, so won't be getting any investment from the dragons Like Plum says, it just goes towards feed and mealworms

Chucky Mama
What about chicken keeping courses or offering chicken sitting depending on your set up?
Jools
I sell my surplus eggs too at £1 for 6 (or £1 for 10 bantam eggs). My husband takes them to the pub at the weekend and is mobbed as soon as he opens the door! I'll never get rich on the proceeds but together with the redundant (or never actually used ) chicken bits n bobs I've just sold on ebay, I have my spending money for next month's holiday to Skye. If you could find some regular customers for your eggs, you'd probably get a good contribution towards their feed costs. Buying egg boxes is the expensive bit, unless you buy in bulk (Regency Poultry & Flytes of Fancy are good for this) but then if you're like me, you'll end up with enough egg boxes to last several years and nowhere to store them - I've just finished selling off my surplus. When you find the fool-proof way of getting them to pay their way, do let us know won't you.
Lavenders_Blue
I sell my eggs but instead of thinking of it as the girls paying their way (it will just never happen ) I save up the egg money to treat myself. Last year my egg sales made around £80 and the girls sent me horse riding on the beach and a few other small treats Edited to add, the hen-sitting idea is a good one if you have space. I'm looking after some hens for a friend at the moment and so far have enough money to get me an automatic door opener for my coop, which is something I would not otherwise have been able to justify spending so much money on. Chortle Chook
I used to buy FR eggs from the farm down the road for 60p per 6. Now I have a set up which must cost me more like £1 an egg! How hopeless is that? But as they say, a smile is worth a pot of gold and my chooks make me smile That's a big return to me.
