tracyann
Hi all, I have today added a three foot x three foot extension on my chooks run so it is now much bigger and whilst I was doing it I noticed Daisy was in and out of the hen house and they were all making a "purring" noise. We reckon that they are getting close to laying, but are not sure. Not heard them make this sound before today. Can anyone shed any light on this? Mollie333
Purring noise.. Does it sound like its a rattling sound? that could be a cold on its way.. Keep a eye on them. Any discharge from the nostrils ect? Otherwise, not sure what you mean by purring. You mentioned you think they're coming into lay, my pekin girl sounded like a frog when her voice 'broke' . Tweety
Hi, my hens purr too but I have not connected it with laying. I think I assumed that they were like my cats, and purred when they were happy! Either way, it's a lovely sound.
Sageandonion
Funny you should say this - I thought mine were making a purring sound the other day, they seem healthy enough though. I like to think it was the sound of contentment .
gongladosh
mine purr when they're happy - they tend to do it it they're contented and tired...
tracyann
Ah I thought it was the case, we were fixing the new extension on when I heard it, so I'm glad I have happy hens... I just wish they'd get on with it and hurry up with my first egg.

gongladosh
I've heard mine purr when laying, when dustbathing on a sunny day, and when nodding off whilst being stroked on my lap! (for this one, mine don't like it when you stop stroking!)
chickanne
Mine make a quiet chuka chuka chuka chuka noise as they go into lay and stomp around in the nest box getting comfy. Could this be the same as your purr??
Chickybaby
Mine purr quite a lot, usually when they are free ranging in the garden and the sun is out.
