Patricia W
I ask because our old petrol driven lawnmower is about to be retired and because I have a knee problem, I'm exploring the option of a small ride-on mower. It can't be more than 29" wide so that we can get it through the garden gate. Anyone got one? I've seen various ones but the Omlet forum is usually the best for REAL advice so Ii'm hoping someone can help
Cinnamon
Hubbys uncle owns a mower shop,so we have had several over the years - all freebies that didn't work & Hubby has tarted up He's good like that! That said, her usually gives them away again as he prefers to use a 'normal' mower on our lawn

Patricia W
I haven't heard of that one - I'll look it up! Thanks.
craftyhunnypie
We've got a Westwood. We actually call it Toby tractor because you can get all sorts of attatchments for it. It reminds me of something the Doozers from Fraggle Rock might have driven. Emma.x
..lay a little egg for me
We've got a Toro which is great because it is a mulching mower so you don't have to find anywhere for the grass clippings to go and the mulch fertilizes the lawn at the same time as mowing. It is pretty nifty and has a good turning circle. My advice is to get one with a good turning circle or you're forever manoeuvring to try to get to the tricky bits. We also looked for a deck that could be cleaned easily as it is the collected grass clippings under the cutting deck that cause the metal to rot away. The best thing about it is that DS loves riding on it so it is a chore he can enjoy doing (unlike loading the dishwasher for example )! Daphne
We've got a LawnFlite - lawn tractor from hell. It got a puncture more or less the first time we used it, it went through a spell of not starting, it won't work if the grass is too long or too wet....I could go on. Positives are that it has a very small turning circle and is very maneouvrable, is quite narrow and not too long so fits in the shed, was £1k about 6 years ago which was a competitive price then, and you can mulch as you go or collect the grass. It seems to work better with OH than for me. We have got used to its annoying little ways, but I wouldn't buy another one or recommend it, although I'm a huge fan of ride-on mowers, it cuts our 0.25 acre in about 45 mins, not the 4 hours plus it took me once with a flymo
Patricia W
Thanks for that Daphne - I just saw that make! One problem I seem to have is that there don't seem to be any places nearby where we can see them in the flesh. So any suggestions within a reasonable drive of Abingdon in Oxfordshire welcome. Daphne
I've pm'd you, not about dealers near Abingdon as I don't know of any, Yellow Pages? Ring a local agricultural merchant and ask for a recommendation? John Deere do them but they were out of our price range but we did ask them where else sold lawn tractors. Or local lawnmower repair firms? Its something else related.
beach chick
we've got a Honda. works well but there are some VERY annoying things about it. taking the grass collection basket off the back so you can put the bung in and thus mulch rather than collect is fine. putting the basket back on AGAIN - which you have to do even if you are in mulching mode - is a complete pain in the behind, you need strength and very long arms. I cant do it - have to wait for mr beach chick to be around. and even then he swears loudly every time! cutting width is another issue - we have an archway between 2 areas of garden and mower is fractionally too wide - our fault I know, but it's a major irritation and means moving garden furniture every time I mow the bit closest to the house! having said that, we have about an acre of grass, and it's a doddle with a ride-on. craftyhunnypie
Hubby done a deal on a Mountfield Tractor Mower. I'm afraid Toby tractor is a bit poorly & may just be used as a ride about on the fields. Quite excited about the Mountfied. I know, i know - it's just a mower - but we get excited over the daftest of stuff! I know it would take forever to cut all 12 acres, but it will do the immediate bit of grass round the chook houses & the bit near the stream, which is the ' tent field'. Boys & their toys eh? UPDATE: It arrived yesterday & it's a wicked beast! We've called it 'Monty'. Emma.x
newcountrygirl
I agree that Countax are very good. We've had one for the past two years and it is excellent.
