New chicken has a ring around leg, when I took off saw bone

Recommended Posts

I bought 2 new chickens yesterday which when I checked the little Pekin noticed she has a yellow ring around her leg which curls round itself so easy to take off and put on. When i took it off i had a shock as the dead skin underneath came off with it and i couls see the bone etc I have put the ring back on for now to help keep the other chickens from seeing it and causing any problems both legs are quite scabby, I'm kicking myself for not noticing yesterday, can anyone help me before I take her to the dreaded vets? Thank you Nichola

Sounds nasty - I'm no expert on exposed bone, but the legs sound like they have a case of scaly leg mite. Did you buy them from a breeder (as it doesn't sound like they've been well looked after!)

I'm sure it's 'fixable', it'll just take some effort and time. If you can't take them back to where you bought them, do take them to vet - there's some useful info here until then:

Good luck!

Thank you for your replies, I don't really feel like taking her back to the farm I got her from as I don't think she'll make it if I do and I have fallen in love with her! Kinda feel that it'll be better for her to be with me and hopefully get better! Vets it is then for our pekin we called Angel.

If it is scaley leg mite then you don't really want to put the treatment on her damaged area so I would treat the leg mite with a treatment you put elsewhere like Johnsons spray or frontline type treatment. Then I would remove the ring and wash the area removing any gunk but not scales and depending on condition underneath use vet powder or cream and if any redness or blood use purple spray to disguise it.

As she is in bad condition I would get some flubenvet to worm them as well. The Johnsons will deal with any lice she may have as well. :D

I agree with Plum's suggestions above, but if she's a new bird to you then you really ought to take her back to the breeder and get a replacement - shame on them for selling a bird in that condition.

Do let us know how you get on, and if you do decide to go to the vets, then keep the receipts so that you can claim it back from the breeder/supplier.

Thank you everyone, just to let you know that Angel (white pekin) is doing ok.

I rang the man a bought her from and he eventually agreed to come and have a look, we took the ring off and he said it had been on there too long and it was too small so had cut into the leg and gave me some cream to put on. He didn't know it had a ring on and because of the feathers on the leg it had been well hidden!!

I can safely say that i won't be thinking of him the next time i purchase chickens, lessons learnt on this one!! At least i managed to escape the vet bill though :P fingers crossed leg heals and don't have to go to vets  but she looks well and eating and drinking fine as well as running away from the other chickens!
