Luvachicken
I just bathed Matilda about a week and a half ago because her botty was really dirty ( from poo ). I followed the instructions on here about how to wash a chicken and dried her carefully with the hairdryer. She looked so pretty afterwards but she soon got mucky again so I bathed her again today. ( I did mean to do it sooner but have been working ) Why does she get so dirty - Charlotte doesn't - they were both wormed in Jan/Feb. Another thing I noticed whilst she was all wet was that the top of her vent sticks out a bit and Charlottes doesn't look like that, although she wasn't impressed with being looked at at all. Something that worries me is that when I had Evie, she had to be pts because she was egg bound, I did notice that she often had a dirty bottom. Is it just a coincidence or the start of something more sinister ? I wouldn't want her to go through what Evie went through. Any advice much appreciated. Egluntyne
What did you worm her with? If you used one of the herbal supplements, it might be worth worming her again with Flubenvet.
101fc
I was advised to give my hen some live yoghurt for a few days incase it was a digestive inbalance and if that didn't work to worm her with the Flubenvet.
Luvachicken
It was Flubenvet that I wormed them with. Maybe I might give the live yoghurt a try.......Is that one of those probiotic yoghurts ?
Chucky Mama
How old is she and is she laying?
Luvachicken
I have had them 2 years and 2months and they were at POL when I got them. As yet neither of them have laid an egg since Christmas...but one did lay something a couple of weeks ago because there was egg yolk on the divider. Chucky Mama
I would have a check of her abdomen for tightness, swelling or fluid. There are so many reports of peritonitis at the moment. I would be tempted to rule that out first. My hen that had it got a smelly dirty bottom when it flared up.
Luvachicken
Chucky Mama, I did feel her and she did feel slightly different to Charlotte. Does that mean a trip to the vet ? Hubby didn't mind the money for the antibiotics but I paid 60 pounds for Evie and her probs and I don't think he'd allow that again
Luvachicken
Sorry, I have to ask but is peritonitis curable ? Does it have a better chance if caught early or doesn't it make much difference ? Just that with poor Evie's treatment she had, she ended up waddling like a very overweight penguin and still had to be pts. I wish I was married to a vet......
