We would like to make a permanent site for our eglu and run in the garden. I'd like to line the run with aubiose - can I lay this directly onto grass (I know there quickly will not be much grass left!) and then just refresh the soil with garden lime each month when 'spring cleaning' or do I need to put down slabs or bark chippings first?

Sorry this is a much rehashed topic - but I'm a bit confused.

I would put the hemcore/aubiose down once the grass is gone as your girls will love the grass between their toes (for as long as it lasts):lol:

I have my hemcore just on top of soil so personally i wouldnt bother with the slabs, my girls love scratting in the dirt under the hemcore :D

Agree - no need for a 'base', just put hemcore/aubiose down when the grass has gone. I started off with bark chippings, and wish I'd been able to get aubiose straight away - much better. However, I do know that some people use the bark chippings outside the run itself, to keep grass down in the enclosed area.

Dont worry about lining the run. Just put the aubiose/hemcore on top the grass or the last of the grass. We did have grass in the run, but now its just compacted soil under the hemcore, it stays lovely and dry.

We did have bark chips surrounding the run for us to walk on but last week we replaced with chipping and its much cleaner/easier, and it will be great in the winter. :)

Welllll.... I think I *would* put a slab base down personally. We have a largish enclosed pen area for our girls to free range and have found rats to be an issue. So, we are in the process of moving the entire area onto a combination of slabs/concrete to prevent the dreaded vermin from getting access.

Just a thought...
