Green Beans

Recommended Posts

I have some green beans that are surplus. I looked on the net to see if they are ok for the chickens and got 3 different answers from various sites. One says never as per this quote "Toxic substance called Solanine

(2 Dried or undercooked Beans Raw, or dry beans, contain a poison called hemaglutin which is toxic to birds." One says yes as long as they are cooked and another says no problem?????? Anyone know the correct answer.

Solanine is a toxin found in the nightshade family, of which the potato is a member. It is rendered harmless by cooking, so never feed uncooked spuds or their peelings to your chickens.

Legumes (peas and beans) contain a trypsin inhibitor which interferes with protein uptake, so it is best to cook the item before dishing it up to the chickens.

Mine love left over green beans .. although they rarely get them as I prefer to eat them myself with some aoili.

I often give mine chick peas (tinned) with the salt and sugar rinsed off. They gobble them up in less time than it takes to tell.
