Omletina Kyckling Posted May 3, 2011 Share Posted May 3, 2011 I have a new resident.....last Sunday a bird appeared in my garden, quite a big fella, thought he was just passing through but he refuses to leave! I did some research on the net and found him to be a white eared pheasant, which is actually on the near endangered list. He is ringed, but I've not managed to catch him (think need more than just me). I contacted the RSPB, RSPCA, local vets etc. and "Ooops, word censored!"ody really wanted to know. I sent photos of him to our local paper last Monday and they have been promising to print them, in the hope of finding his owner.....the photos were finally in today. He's really upset things with the hens as he tried to get in their run and there was quite a bit of argy-bargy going on, resulting in two of the hens turning nasty and attacking my lovely Tiina....so I've had two hens in the slammer (puppy cage) since that! Anyway, he's still here, spending most of the time round the back of the run, and I just hope an owner turns up, failing that, does anybody want a white eared pheasant?!!! Omletina Kyckling Posted May 3, 2011 Author Share Posted May 3, 2011 Yes, re description/name, when I looked on internet there are white eared and brown eared pheasants etc. Basically the description means that he's white all over, but he has little spikey tufts at the sides of his head which you can't see on this photograph which are his ears. He used to fight with our 2 cockerels and ended up killing one of them. I hope he is reunited with his owner soon. The funniest thing was when the woman from the Huddersfield Examiner rang me and said a similar bird had been sited in another garden (about 4 miles away?) so she said it couldn't be the same bird.....I gently pointed out that it was a bird and could fly so perhaps it was the same bird?...... Omletina Kyckling Posted May 4, 2011 Author Share Posted May 4, 2011 No, nothing like that which is nearby, Harewood house is the nearest stately home and it's quite a way but he could have flown in stints from wherever he's come from......I looked online and cocks sell for around £120 and hens for about £250 so whichever it is, it's worth a few pennies.... I wouldn't mind but there's a huge field behind me with hens, geese and horses in it where he'd have far more room but he seems to think he lives here in my tiny garden. I looked at forum and searched under pheasant and there have only ever been 3 topics on pheasants, so don't think pheasant people lurk there. I managed to catch him this morning....he went in the run and was so busy scratching around he didn't notice me walk down the garden and into the run. I positioned my puppy cage so the door was open and corralled him into it! I've rung the breeder I spoke to the other week who's tried to contact the person he sold one to with no success, but he's coming tonight to take him away and reunite him with other pheasants!
