Grub containers

Recommended Posts

Hi

Another question from a newbie, how full should i fill the grub container, if i fill it full they will eat out of it with 1 of them pushing it on the floor then eating it but that means food left on floor which i want to avoid. of if i fill it up a little they dont seem to want to put their heads in , Didnt think i would be worrying so much over chickens :lol:

I don't fill mine very full, but I did put some meal worms in to start with on top of their normal rations, just to tempt them. It seemed to work and now they are just fine putting their heads in. The trouble is that all birds like to be able to look all round them while they feed, as they are a prey species, but greed will overcome this and the Grub does keep the food from being trashed.

To begin with my cockerel used to take advantage of his hens when their heads were in the Grub but now even he seems to have decided this is just too rude :lol:

:lol::lol::lol: Cheeky chook!

The only reason I fill mine up is because one of my pekins is so small she can't reach the bottom of the grub!

I have a nice big stock of old peanut feeders and I really rate them for my bantams. I know roughly how much they get through in a day and only put out that amount in however many feeders I need for however many bantams I've got at the time. At the moment I'm using two peanuts for eight bantams and that means they're never more than half full. Any more than that and they start chucking it around and a cute little mouse comes in and helps himself once they've gone to bed. He's given me quite a shock in the evenings when I've gone out to shut them up and put the feeders away!! :lol:

That's a longwinded way of say about half full here! :roll:
