Live mealworms

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about offering the girls some live mealworms for a bit of variety. I believe I can get these from fishing tackle shops, but what sort of quantity do you usually buy :?: I don't want too many because I only have two girls and I don't suppose I should give them too many at once, but I don't know how long they will keep if they don't eat them all in the first day. Won't they turn into some kind of bug :?: Confused about this :?

Our local Pets At Home used to sell them for about £3 a tub (some tubs more 'alive' than others  )

That said, we've not seen any recently.

Aldi has a deal on dried mealworms at the moment incidentally - £2.50 a tub (usually about £6 or 7 in garden centres)

Good lord... I don't think you'll have any problem with them eating them all! My girls go MAD for them!! :o

They know the tub I keep them in and come running. It's proving very handy at the mo as I am only letting them out for short supervised FR sessions after losing a girl to the dreaded fox 2 weeks ago :(

I get mine from the RSPB website and you get about 1000 worms for around £12 they take about a week to come. Though I have bought small amounts from pet shops including pets at home but it works out expensive. They will keep for a good couple of weeks - I've had them for 3 weeks ok. Keep them somewhere dark & cool and then not too many will change into lavea (that look like aliens) then bugs (flour beetle I think)- Though my girls love the bugs and lavea too! Just put a few air holes in the lid and pop a piece of lettuce or something in there for them to munch on. My OH even had the robin feeding out of his hand for some tasty meal worms lately :D and my five day old chicks love a treat once or twice a day of chopped up meal worms...... :vom:

Go for it - your girls will LOVE you for it!!!
