self cleaning litter box - elderly cat *Sad update

Recommended Posts

Yes we have one of those. It's OK although 'self cleaning' is a bit of an exaggeration :D

We have two 13 year old cats who we've had from kittens and, although they've always had access to the garden, have always preferred to use the indoor facilities  This litter tray does keep all the litter in one place and makes it easier to empty by turning it on its side and then pulling out the tray. It has meant that we can leave the tray for 3-4 days without having to empty it. In 13 years we're on our 3rd model.

I would recommend getting a paw cleaning mat as well as this helps tease out the stray bits of litter than otherwise get flicked out of paws upon exit.

The upsides:

The litter stays in one place largely.

You don't have to empty every day.

The downsides:

You have to use clumping litter for it to work properly which is not the best nor the most environmentally friendly.

The plastic slats where the 'clean' litter is supposed to fall through can get blocked with a rogue cat poo or clump.

It still does smell a bit but only if not emptied after a few days and still better than a bog standard tray.

The clips joining top to bottom can break which is a pain if you happen to be rolling it over at the time (this happened on our second model).

It's rather big.

With hindsight we may have opted for one of those litter trays with the door and filter on it (but we do have an especially thick cat who probably wouldn't have got the hang of the door (it took her ages to master the cat flap!) so swings and roundabouts perhaps....

I have a vision of 2 hands a disinfectant spray and a bag for the poo etc coming and cleaning the darn thing out - I suspect like me you end up cleaning it out - thankless task. The other week our cat had puked on floor and OH :shameonu: shouted "cats been sick can you clean it up" I asked him why he couldnt do and he replied he was making the tea  I mean hasnt heard of soap and water  yup a self cleaning one would be luverlee

We have one of the ones with a lid and a door, the filters only work for a limited time, but because it is enclosed it does contain most of the mess and smell. I have a very 'thick' cat and she got the hang of it pretty quickly, we got it because out other cat is an obsessive burier and we used to get litter everywhere, she does occasionally manage to get it through the door, but it keeps everything much tidier overall.

I have a husband who won't touch the litter tray and calls me if cat has been sick on the floor; strange for a man who will go into our septic tank if there is a problem....yes there has been :vom::vom:

I change my aged cat's tray four times a day. A few sheets of newspaper, a handful of wood litter...job done in 15 seconds. Always clean and fresh.

thankyou for your advice, I got a covered litter tray yesterday with a filter on top and have installed in the downstairs loo and the cellar door is now locked. Tiggy cat had turned it into her own personal toilet :vom: even with normal litter trays down there she was ignoring them & poo/wee on the floor. She was showing an interest in the covered one this morning & then went outside for the first time in 7 months :D

Poor darling. She is obviously losing it a bit. Perhaps you could try some Feliway?

she has a collar on sprayed with the stuff and 3 plug ins in the house, i think the poor old thing is a bit senile, at 23 years old i think she can just about get away with anything
