quickcluck
Managed one pee on the pad today he's so fast I can't see the signs quick enough, I'm worried i'll never get it right! Especially after I put him in his crate and he stripped his bed and poo'd on it!! grrrrr so new bed has now been through the machine! He has been pretty funny today tho, which makes up for it.... edit - just pee'd on the carpet AGAIN, and i'd just put him on the mat and waited patiently He's not had his 2nd lot of injections so is banned from the garden at the moment

Seagazer
Finlay is just so gorgeous - no wonder you couldn't resist. Good luck on the training. I think I used to just keep taking Cookie outside regularly virtually every hour, after eating and when she woke up. We let her use the garden straight away, didn't know they weren't supposed to go out there if they'd not had their injections Looking forward to seeing what he looks like when he gets bigger. My Nan used to have a scotty cross and Cookie is a poodle cross too.
quickcluck
How old was she Ann? Is 9 weeks too young to learn? Did you confine them to the kitchen? Im finding the crate thing too stressfull. Hoping that will get better tho.
Seagazer
Cookie was 8 weeks old when we got her. We used a crate, it was huge so we had it sectioned off to fit her, had paper in one bit and a bed. She loved the crate, they usually find them relaxing and safe to be in. We would often find that she'd take herself off to the crate to have a sleep. I think they normally don't like to mess where they sleep. We used the crate for when we were going out and for night time, I never used it if she'd been naughty as I didn't want her thinking of it as a punishment. Try and stick with it as it could be a blessing in the end especially when Finlay is really in the chewing stage. Its still early days, you'll get there. chick wiggle
We used a crate too and George loved it. He too would go in on his own accord for a nap where he knew he wouldnt be disturbed. We would leave the door open when he did this. We would close the door for 5-10 seconds at first then open it and give him a treat and gradually increased the time with the door closed, it never bothered him at all. The longest he was ever left in the crate was about an hour and half when i went food shopping. It kept him safe and kept our furniture safe too We dont use it now as im happy to leave him in the house knowing hes safe and wont cause any damage. I would definately recommend one, theres plenty of info easily found on the 'net. Heres a picture of George climbing into his crate, i put a divide down the middle too because it was just too big for him Oh yeah, i also made a cover for it so it wouldnt look too ugly in my living room

quickcluck
thanks Sandie I've started to play games with him in his crate so that he will go in a out, and I do close the door for a few seconds while he's in there.... In the mean time he's in the kitchen with a baby gate, and news paper everywhere. But the crying is upsetting even tho I know it's normal and harmless. He hates the gate even when I'm in the kitchen with him I need to pop out tomorrow, so am fretting abit..
Chucky Mama
Try either a DAP diffuser plugged in to the room that you leave him in or a spritz of DAP spray in his crate. It contains canine appeasing pheromone which mimics the pheromone that mum would give off when feeding her puppies. It has a very calming and reassuring effect on puppies in this situation
The Dogmother
Yes, i used that when Ruby was a pup. It takes a couple of days, but they usually take well to a crate and it's somewhere for them to go for peace and quiet. I played games with Rubes, hiding treats or favourite toys in her crate so that it was always a positive experience for her. When we adopted Cyrus, i did away with the crate and made up a dog bed under the kitchen surface where it had been. Both of them are in the kitchen when I am out, and just love to chill out there. Seagazer
I also had a cover over the crate as we had it in the hallway in the end (it was soooo huge). I used a nice red throw over it. I think they like it if its like a den.
chick wiggle
Aw its awful the first time you leave them isnt it, i was worse than when i left the kids at nursery Do you have a kong to fill for him, that will keep him busy, then he can have a nice nap and before he knows it, you'll be back. You, on the otherhand, will be a nervous wreck!
Space Chick
I still use DAP collars for my elderly terrier during fireworks heavy times, its great, it really works. Kongs are also great
quickcluck
I will look into the kong, as that sounds good, also the DAP, will do some web surfing..... Slightly better day, but yet again, he's fallen asleep at 5pm and is refusing to fully wake up! This also means he's not eaten since 12 lunch time, and he'll be awake in the middle of the night again! Need to sort that out big time. They said to feed him 4 times aday which is tricky to get in especially as his timetable is so very different to mine. My DH is beside himself as I am having a mini nervous breakdown here........ I am at a loss, as now i'm worried that he's not had enough to eat and is sleeping too much! The irony is, i'm a laid back person in the real world.... The Dogmother
I wouldn't worry, he'll be tired with all the upheaval and growing; he will eat when he needs to. Kongs stuffed with some mince and then frozen are great toys as they keep them busy for hours.
chick wiggle
I worried about George not eating too, i even mentioned it to the vet. He told me not to worry as a dog will not starve himself, so i'll say the same to you although i understand how much of a worry it is Even now, he will go all day without eating sometimes, im sure i have thrown more food away than he has eaten, then other days, he eats breafast, dinner and tea If you are worried mention it to your vet. As for the sleeping pattern, well i dont know what to suggest as we had George sleeping in our bedroom at night and he settled really well. I only had to get up for the first week or so during the night, which is understandable as their bladders are so small. I just got up, took him out, he wee'd and then i took him straight back to bed. I didnt play or talk to him, so no stimulus. I feel sure the fact he could see/hear/sense us sleeping nearby helped him to relax and so sleep better too. He slept in a cat box on a chair beside my bed so i could just reach out and sooth him if he wimpered until he grew bigger, then we got him a huge doggie cushion on the floor which he still sleeps on now. Im sure Finlay will settle soon
quickcluck
Yes he is upstairs with us. He would be up there eventually so I don't mind, this morning he was up at 4.30 and i jiggled my hand until 6.30 then got up. I weighed out the 110gms it says he should have and have half left! he is unconscious at my feet, completely floppy, impossible to wake, but very cute to look at! quickcluck
Thought i'd report that i've had a slightly better day today. There has been remarkably less crying, and I braved it and went out twice. He's also eaten more today and been more awake, lets hope tomorrow is another good day.....
