CJB
Can anyone help, again Have now changed bedding to Hemcore, directions on packet are to activate for a stable with a gallon of water for a couple of hours. Is that the same for the chicken house? Have layed bedding, just waiting to see if i need to chuck water on it.

The Pearsons
I didn't put water on the hemcore in the cube but it was raining when I put it down in the run. Mind I am a complete novice at this and only put the hemcore down last night so would be interested in other replies.
Jools
No you definitely don't need to - that's just for horses. You didn't inherit of them did you
mahu
Hello I tend to dampen it as soon as I can as it gets very windy here and it can blow all over the place and the water stops that. I have found dampening the ground first too helps Martin
Jules.
We put some down for the first time last weekend. we did dampen the soil a bit first ,but not really much. So far it is great, not blown away & soaking up all those lovely poos.
Egluntyne
No...its only in stables that you need to do that.
Jill
No I don't dampen it. It soon dampens down anyway - especially this summer

Jukebox Tim
Could any of you tell me what this hemcore is and if it's likely to be better than bark (we're using bark at the moment, which is OK"ish"). What are the advantages of hemcore and where can I get it from? Many thanks, Tim
The Dogmother
It's shredded hemp stems and is very dry and absorbent, available from most horse feed places in an enormous bale. Much better IMHO than bark - less damp and smelly. http://www.hemcore.co.uk/ http://www.aubiose.co.uk
Jukebox Tim
Many thanks indeed. Just reading about it now. It will have the added value of not having to make a trip to Homebase for the bags of bark! I'll give it a try.
The Dogmother
One bale lasts for ages as it's compacted in. Less smell as it seems to deodorise. I have found that it composts very quickly too.
Jaime
I think it probably works out cheaper than bark at around £7.00 a huge bale. It certainly is cleaner and absorbs poo much better
