Old Speckled Hen
What a misfortune here http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11756 I for one wish him and Mrs RAB a speedy recovery to normality. It was a hilarious description of a horrible incident though RAB I hope you didn't mind me posting this here. There are lots on this forum who appreciate your advice. Daphne
And I've just this minute got in, gone up the garden to let the hens out and found a huge cloud of our bees swarming. From our strongest hive Co-beek very despondent. I will tell him about this in an attempt to cheer him up. The swarm will be going to live next door as we don't have any more spare hives RAB - I do hope you and Mrs RAB are recovering well.
Old Speckled Hen
From our strongest hive It's a fine balance isn't it? We all get caught out. One of mine has gone twice and I don't mean a cast. Swarm caught went again 5 weeks later
Olly
Crumbs - sorry to hear it, hope Mrs RAB has recovered. Mine swarmed this morning - must be the weather for it.
Old Speckled Hen
Did you get them, Olly?
Daphne
Just as a point of interest , you may remember last year I found myself capturing 3 swarms. Well, when we went to check on this one, 1 hour after it was mostly balled in a hedge, it had disappeared. It was a large swarm, and in theory could have been 2 of our hives given we've had rubbish weather for weeks and after midday it became very hot here (forecast 30 tomorrow). However, we have inspected the 2 weaker hives and I'm pretty certain it didn't come from them, no signs of QCs. However, the strong hive is still covered in bees outside - we may have had a swarm which has returned to its original home (and no doubt is still going to leave home). We haven't inspected as there is too much activity and anyway OH and co-beek got stung whilst looking from a distance much later in the afternoon. I won't be around tomorrow so goodness knows what will happen.
Lesley
You don't do things by halves do you Rab? - I hope Mrs.R has recovered.
Olly
Did you get them, Olly? they were in my apple tree, but on a branch hanging over next door's garden. Next door are having an extension built and there's no access to the garden, and I didn't think I could scale a 6' fence on my own (and get back with a box of bees!). I called for help, but by the time my friend arrived they'd taken off again, so maybe they wouldn't have stayed anyway. I'm cross because I had inspected the previous week but must have missed one. Oh well, bee keeping is all about experience!
Guest
Hi all, Thanks for the best wishes. Mrs T (my wife is famous, well 'well known', in lacemaking circles, so has retained her previous handle) is fine. She has no hang-ups about the bees (last got multiple stings about 10 years ago) and never had a reaction like this. Getting her to carry the epipen will be a continuing struggle. The bees will have to go from the garden. The car has temporarily been 'replaced' with the 1980 Mini Clubman estate automatic until I can locate a suitable fuel efficient oil burner (I much prefer diesels). The important thing is no (lasting) 'injury' to J and it was a good job the firemen were on hand with the oxygen mask. Things should get better but we were planning on staying in bed on the 25th July! Regards, RAB
Sheilaz
So sorry to hear this, I always read your beekeeping advice, how are you both now?
Guest
Teabag, We are both fine, thanks. Car is not, never will be!! I am hassled, replacing cards, passes, licences, filling forms, getting prices, limited transport, getting Mini up and running, etc. J was fine after Saturday, just a sore head - and mostly where she hit it on the ground, I think. Olly
The paperwork after something like that must be horrendous ... glad to hear that Mrs RAB is fine though, because that was the most scary bit of it and it could all have been so much worse. Er - what on earth do you write on the insurance claim form? 'I accidentally set light to my car?' or 'the car caught alight and then set off under its own motion'? Guest
Olly, While that is one possible scenario, but there are several others - electrical faults, static, faulty smoker lighter (it turned off automatically and should not start unless a small 'catch' is depressed first). There may be others. I will be going for one of the others as the cause - everything about the whole saga smacked of 'freak occurrence', after all. I have always been very careful with my property (ask my wife!! - she calls our house 'Fort Knox' or similar, etc, etc). How many burning cars actually start themselves and drive off on their own for instance? It was very close to a green burial site and that is where it was headed (until it luckily jammed under a tree, which had previously part fallen across it's path), so maybe there are a few mischievous (or malevolent) ghosts about the place, who knows?
