Thin eggshell

Recommended Posts

One of my 4 Omlet girls (2 pepperpots and 2 gingernut rangers) called Darth vada, Victoria, Cluck and Chelsea (as per football team belonging to my 8 year old son)....is laying thin shelled eggs and has been for the last 10 days or so. The egg is laid on the bars of the cube and gets pushed/sat on so it falls through and BREAKS and Is NO GOOD!! I have got really used to having all of these lovely eggs and being one down makes a difference. I have given more grit and started with natural yogurt too, but they don't like the grit much. The rest of their diet is layer pellets. I have also cut down on their free ranging antics so now they only have about 2 hours....with all of the long days they were getting from lunchtime til just before dusk. Any other ideas? I think, but not sure the chicken who is laying them is Victoria (a pepperpot)I did see her fast asleep, head tucked in last Saturday afternoon I have never seen that before. The chickens are all just over 1 year old. Thank you.

Some good tips in the FAQ's section here

Grit doesn't help with soft shelled eggs, it helps them digest food better by grinding up the food in their gizzard. Most grit is sold with oyster shell - which does help, as it contains calcium. Try some of the suggestions in the link above, but if it continues, then maybe take her to a vet as it could be an infection.
