chick wiggle
Oh yes, i forgot to say in my excitement That is a blue egg you can see, which would have been/will be, an araucana. I got a mixed lot from a local breeder, so far i have, 1 speckled sussex, 1 leghorn, 1 orp (buff i think) and 2 barnevelders.

chick wiggle
I was so touched this afternoon when i decided to give Tyra a treat of corn. I put it in a galley pot high up so the chicks couldnt reach it. Yep, Tyra got the corn and dropped it down for the chicks! I changed it for mealworms and she did exactly the same ... what a good mummy I hope shes looking after them now cos its absolutely pouring down, thundering and lightining now

chick wiggle
They are now spending more and more time outside, following mum around like good little chicks I love to see them outside, unfortunately today the tarp has had to remain over the run ... flippin' weather

chick wiggle
Aww how old are the chicks? im hoping mine will stay with them til they're old enough to look after themselves
surfer_chicken
They are five weeks old- so I'm letting mum free range with the other adults during the day (as she's pecking the chicks), and forcing her to keep sleeping with the chicks as I think she's not supposed to leave them at night until 6 weeks. I was surprised how sudden the change in her was, one day she was a perfectly normal chicken mum and the next she was crouching and eating the treats herself, the day after that I saw her pecking them so back to the flock she went. On the plus side I got my first egg in 2 months from her today
chick wiggle
Ah well that sounds alright if shes still keeping them warm at night. Sudden change of heart with her though
coco
I maanged to get Faye to stay with her chicks till they were six and a half weeks as by then she was chasing them and desperate to get back with the others. Its lovely watching Mum and chicks though.
arwenskye
We are awaiting our first chicks from our broody buff orp. we have 4 eggs from a local farm and she has sat on them whilst we were away-we have a few days left. Unfortunately she broke an egg when we moved her and killed the chick inside but hopefully the other 3 will hatch-I'm starting to get nervous and excited all at the same time-does the mum keep them warm enough once hatched? chick wiggle
Oh yes, mum does everything, its perfect! Good luck, fingers crossed for you
arwenskye
2 out of three eggs hatched today. She won't let me look at the chicks again though-I just hope we don't have to separate the chicks from Buffy. When do the chicks start eating? Lewis
Cute Love using a broody rather than an incy Cilla + Esmerelda have chicks atm and Mabel is still sat broody in the cube, been tempted to let her keep some eggs but know I shouldn't! The chicks will need some chick crumb arwenskye and can start eating straight away but more likely after a couple of days
arwenskye
the 2 chicks are so cute, I'll try and get photos soon. They are in the rabbit hutch at the moment as the cube isn't ideal for chicks. the poor rabbit has been moved to the other run ( a converted guinea pig ark to hen house) they are both eating and drinking fine and Buffy is a great mum so far! Should I let Buffy out in the garden to give her some exercise? or just leave her with the chicks for a while? Buffy even showed them off to the other chickens when they all came to look at the rabbit hutch yeseterday
