Unsecure chicken perches

[Mr Rhode Island Red]

One of my Ancona cross chickens won't make up his/her mind as to what he/she is.

 

Yesterday, he/she was crowing like a cockerel. Today, he/she is singing egg song ( the noise hens make after laying an egg)

 

Is there any methods or tricks I can use to figure out what gender he/she actually is?

What do the tailfeathers look like? Are they rounded or pointed? The males usually have some pointy, droopy sickle feathers by the time they start crowing.

I'd say he isn't a hen. Look at those saddle and hackle feathers.

Yup, looks like a boy to me too. Sometimes they just take a bit longer to develop.

Oooh lovely bird - gorgeous feathering. Yep, sadly he's a laddie. My buff sussex looked exactly like his sister (didn't help much as she grew a huge comb too) until the last moult when he developed the same back feathers (beautiful golden ones) and curled black tail feathers with a lovely bottle green sheen. He was allowed to remain a girl until he crowed as DD loved him to bits. And he was a lovely bird - his sister is a ratbag though. He only crowed once and then we had him for dinner. Don't think he enjoyed the invite though.
