Treacle
I am trying to resist!!!! But there is a spare bit of ground in my garden that is about 10' x 12' which currently houses an empty greenhouse, the compost bin and a lot of weeds. (Can you see where I am goiung with this?) The area is lower than the rest of the garden and walled/fenced on 3 sides. It would make a fantasic chicken area I think. How many do you reckon I could have in that space? The best bit is it's at the bottom pf the garden unseen from the house so DH won't know!!!
Ain't Nobody Here
It seems a waste not to put that area to good use . Number of chickens would depend on what housing/run you decide on I reckon .
Treacle
I have a wooden coop (spare!) that will house upto six but I would only use it for 4-5 then I could put a small fence with a gate at the open end then they could have roam about. As it is a sunken area I could put a sloped roof over and have a ready made walk in run! I have just been down to measure it 4.5m x 3.4m I have also found to spare wood and chicken wire!!! Chortle Chook
That land is just going to waste and in our overcrowded country that is surely a heinous sin But does your OH really never go to the bottom of the garden? What chickens will you get? With a totally separate area you could have something completely different from your current group of girls
Henchanted
I have just been down to measure it 4.5m x 3.4m ....I have also found to spare wood and chicken wire!!! With that amount of ground space you could have 15-16 birds in a permanent/roofed run.....WOW

Henchanted
I make it 12-13 birds but obviously they need to sleep somewhere too [..../quote] I was imagining a house on stilts/legs so you could feasibly use all the ground space if you wanted... Treacle
Ok my first mistake was to mention my idea to hubby after he had had a couple of glasses of vino thinking he would say " Yes what a great idea carry on" I should have waited until he had a bottle !!! He is worried that we won't be able to see them constantly from the house. I'm not sure how many the council would be happy for me to have. When I said about six they were fine about it but 12-13 might be pushing it! maybe another 4!!

Even so you'd want at least 1sq meter per bird.
Henchanted
Even so you'd want at least 1sq meter per bird. Doesn't 4.5m X 3.5m make 15.75 metres ? Hence a maximum of 15-16 birds if the ground under the house is available for scratching ? Am I missing something fluffy chick ? Treacle, whether you get 4 or 10 more I hope you enjoy getting (and sharing pics of) them and I hope that your OH discovers the pleasure of spending time in the garden with them not just looking out of the window....
