Miss Millies Chicken
The local veg and flower show next weekend has an egg class. Apparently this class in the show is always hotly contested. My ex bat Brunhilda is laying some very nice shaped brown eggs at the moment, so have foolishly decided to enter six of her eggs. Does anyone have any good tips on how best to prepare and display the eggs for showing.
Daphne
Oooh have fun You are looking for 6 eggs which are closely matched. Start collecting them now, if you haven't done already. The best tip I was given by somebody who is pretty good at egg showing is to put all your eggs in a large egg tray and you can soon start to see which are the best shape and the same size. I have to say finding 6 eggs the same is a real challenge (not as bad as 12 but a darn sight harder than 3!) The Poultry Club of GB has a good page or 2 on how to show an egg and what shape you are looking for (not too rounded or too long and pointy). http://[/url]http://www.poultryclub.org/eggs/showing-eggs/ The judge will be looking for good shell quality, no calcium lumps or rings of extra shell around the middle. The shells shouldn't be thin (sometimes you can just tell a thin shelled egg), nor should it be porous (look closely and some egg shells will have tiny bits of greyish matt colouring). The egg should be clean (I wipe mine over with a damp cloth a bit, trying not to lose the bloom), but polishing is not allowed! Our local poultry club show provides paper plates with sawdust on and you arrange the eggs in a circle but I'd double check that's the go at the local village produce show. Good Luck
laurmurf
Mostin is the Queen of Egg showing - if she's online she'll be happy to help... you've set yourself some task with 6 though - she and I usually go for 3 of same colour or mixed colours as well as contents. 6 is hard! good luck! Miss Millies Chicken
The schedule for the class says 6 eggs and its under the domestic section along side the Victoria sponges and best 6 jam tarts. Its supposed to be a bit of fun but I heard on the grapevine thats its deadly serious. So I will have to up the security on the nest box If you are showing different coloured eggs do they all have to be the same size. Only two of my hens are laying what I call suitable eggs. Both are brownish coloured but the size is complelelty different 54/70g. It doesnt say in the schedule anything about displaying them, so I was going to put them on a white plate with clean straw. Thanks Daphne for the link it was most helpful
Daphne
Yes, I'm afraid the eggs should be the same size - the judge will be looking for consistency as well as perfection! Talking of it all being taken very seriously, the lady who gave that top tip is actually our club's champion egg shower (ie show-er not shower!), she has been doing it for many years and she has a fund of stories about how competitive it all gets. This includes one well-known gentleman from elsewhere who shows old eggs (ie eggs which have won but then they keep coming out) - you are meant to show fresh eggs. Although define 'fresh'. Anyway, apparently he was well known on the circuit, and would always put his eggs out last. Except one time, he did this and at least one of them exploded

Miss Millies Chicken
Spent most of yesterday evening pondering on which 6 eggs to take to the show today. Must have chosen well as Queenie's 6 eggs won the class. My Victoria Sandwich also won its class thanks in part to 3 great eggs from Millie. Compared to some of the other sponges mine had a lovely rich yellow colour. And just to put the icing on the cake my pumpkin won the largest in the show A good day all around
