emmastar
Hello all im leaving for wales with the kids in less than an hour and just been out to refil food and water and give the girls a once over . Mop is sat in the nest box ( on no eggs as i remove them each day ) and is being unusualy agressive when i try to take her out . She has been in and out of the nest box for the last few days but not stayed put after i remover her dailey egg but this morning she went a but mad when i took the egg out and is not staying put . She has been out this morning to have some food and water and done a huge poo . The other half is staying at home this week and will be watching them for me any advice i can give him ? Dose it sound like she is broody ?
fluffy chick
Yep fraid so. I would put her in a cage. I use a small dog cage upside down so the wire is at the bottom and the plastic tray acts as a roof. I also put a 'perch' in there cos I'm soft. I use plastic coop cups for food and water and leave for 3 days, day and night. It it is raining I put an omlet shade over the top too. If she heads back to the nest box she needs to go back in for another day. happy hols!
Redwing
I'd just get him to hook her off the nest when he goes out to check them, she wont lose a massive amount of condition in a week and you can try more firm tactics if she is still like that when you get back
jennym
Same thing happened to us - broody hen just as we were going away for 5 days and the neighbour was going to look after them for us. Luckily she was agreeable enough to eat, drink & poo every time he booted her off the nest, so he did that for us a couple of times each day and we left it at that while we were away. She was still broody when we got back though and then we resorted to ice blocks in the nest (not easy to use the cage method in our setup). That took about 4 days of her trying to hatch the ice blocks to finally snap her out of it. Stubborn girl.
emmastar
Ty for the advice i came back this afternoon , my oh has done a good gob with the girls they all have a good belly full but mop was sat in the nest box and went for me again when i tryed to see what shape she was in . After hauling her out she is quite thin ive moved her for 15 min to a bit i sectioned of for food and water and after some abuse from her she has gone back and is pecking the corn on the cob i brought them back . How do i keep her in good shape as i carnt put her in a broody cage but i also dont want her to make herself ill .
fluffy chick
I've had 3 stubborn broodies this year that the cage didn't work on anyway so don't worry. I think mine egged each other on! Ijust turfed them out the nest box a couple of times a day and they ate and drank then. When the neighbours were out (and couldn't hear the chickens kicking off) I shut them out for a couple of hrs or so.
