This might be a bit of a dim question , but where do people generally store their house deeds? We will shortly be paying of our mortgage and have been pondering the best place to store this rather important document.

You may find that your solicitor is happy to keep them in their strong room at no charge if they already have your Wills etc....

If your property is registered at the Land Registry - and most is, these days - then you don't need any deeds.

Yup; all deeds have been transferred electronically; only a few aren't on the system yet; I have mine in a fire-proof box at home but quite honestly I could wallpaper a sizable room with them. It's best to hang on though isn't it!

Yes. We did one through our financial advisor. Think we may need to update it though. Lots of things have changed since we wrote them.

We did have a solicitor once upon a time, but he seems to have died.

Yes that is right. We paid off our mortgage in June and have put the deeds in a floor safe we have in the house as there is no need to pay for a solicitor to keep them safe for you.

I'd be wary of relying totally on the Land Registry. I remember reading this in the newspaper.

when my mum and dad paid off their mortgage, they left them in the bank. the bank said that if they still owe (even £1) then they are responsible for looking after the deeds so mum and dad did that

Most Solicitors won't charge their clients for keeping deeds etc, if you update your Wills, find a Solicitor to you like and ask them to keep your Deeds (and the new Wills) as part of the deal.

I have mine at home (were returned to me when I transferred the mortgage a few years back) the history of my house and the road is fascinating. I keep it in my safe.

Fireproof tin box / safe. Always tickled me that we could keep anything but a donkey here! Our new deeds for the new place are enough to wallpaper a few rooms.

we specifically cannot keep horses we actually couldnt get a horse in the back garden, but thats not the point nothing else is specified, so I could keep llamas or elephants, but no horses

Yes that's what we said..we can have pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, peacocks, monkeys, tigers etc..but sadly no donkey.
