Other dog: feel guilty but not my fault

Recommended Posts

oh dear. this is a bit long, sorry.

just back from the beach with Ozzie. there is a dog called Sam who is utterly obsessed with Oz, and every time we meet bounces up to play, barking at us. not a problem; Oz doesnt actually want to play, he wants to retrieve his ball ad infinitum.

what usually happens is that Sam steals Oz's ball and wont give it back. his owner (who is nice) then pitches up and spends 15 mins trying to get the ball back from Sam - this involves prolonged attempts to actually catch him, and then trying to get the ball out of his mouth, which he will not let go of. once they get home, he drops Oz's ball and she puts it back through our gate next time she's passing, so no problems.

but TODAY... Sam appeared like a bullet from nowhere as per usual, and pinches Oz's ball straight from beneath his jaws. Oz is a total wuss and never retaliates in any way. this ball is the only type he will actually play with - tennis ball sized, very soft rubber, and it squishes flat. this is fine for Oz, who has a mouth like butter and doesnt want to hold on to it anyway because he wants you to throw it.

Sam heads back to owner, ball in mouth. I pursue because owner is quite far away. Sam stops a few feet away from me, so I say "give" - and he only goes and swallows the flipping thing!!! :o

I KNOW it wasnt my fault, there was really nothing I could do to stop Sam getting it or get it off him once he had it, but oh dear I hope he will be ok. Owner didnt blame me or anything just looked at Sam and said some choice words to him. just praying it will emerge at the other end.

 Oh dear, it really wasn't your fault. I would be quite surprised if the ball did pass through without causing a problem though :anxious: It may need to be surgically removed. I would get them to have the dog looked at by a vet. If it is still in the stomach there is a small chance that they can remove it with a scope before it moves on.

OMG... he's quite a big collie or collie type - very long legs, quite a tall dog. thing is, I only know her from dog-walking, I dont know where she lives and dont know anyone else who does. I think she is the sort who would definitely keep an eye out though, so guess all I can do is keep my fingers crossed.

although I know it wasnt my fault I do feel bad  if only I'd taken a plastic bottle to throw for Oz rather than a ball then no harm would have been done, I just felt like a walk without bending down every 30 secs to pick up and throw the bottle again, the ball thrower is just so much easier.

Sorry if I have made you feel bad. It really wasn't your fault. The bigger the dog the better. It is probably too late to do much now. Get her to keep an eye out for depression and vomiting. If he is sick at all she will need to get him to the vet. These spongy balls can squash up in the bowel and prevent anything shifting past them. Let's hope it passes through, he will become unwell fairly quickly if it doesn't. She can be thankful that she doesn't own This dog

it would be a Lab wouldnt it?!

dont worry I dont feel any worse than I did... and I do know there is nothing I could have done, and Sam is a right old pain with his habits.

only consolation is its not a spongy ball, hard to describe really - very thin, soft, rubbery plastic but with air (and a squeak) in the middle). so when you compress it it goes really flat and then you have to wait for it to reinflate before its any good again. so maybe it will stay flat in the stomach (due to lack of oxygen?) and he will just produce something rather unusual in due course. or maybe he sicked it up on the way home. not that I'm clutching at straws or anything.

My weimaraner once stole a very large pigs ear off another dog; it hadn't been softened at all & I am still amazed at the memory of her swallowing it whole!

This is a blog of some of the more unusual items dogs have swallowed; I still can't get over the knife one. Did you hear about the lab with the christmas tree lights?
