nete92
Hi there. At last someone who may be able to help me....please? My broody Japanese quail has today hatched 4 chicks. One seemed dead outside it's shelter but I revived it by warming it in my incubator( I hatched my original quail chicks in it) I have put it back safely with mum but they are in an outside aviary & as it's getting colder now I was thinking I may move mum &chicks indoors if need be. I would rather leave them in their natural space but they are too precious to risk it. Could you please possibly give me your opinion or any advice on it please? I am worried I could lose them to the cold in their 1st night. Thanks. Anita
Chucky Mama
I'm no expert on quails but it is getting quite cold at night now. I'd be tempted to bring them indoors out of the chill. Once little ones get cold they are in trouble very quickly.
Lewis
Hi Anita - welcome to the forums I would bring them indoors into a dog crate/indoor rabbit hutch if you can. Quail chicks are only tiny and so are much more at risk of chill, they should also be away from other adults as they may attack them. Its quite late in the year to hatch so I would keep them indoors or at least in a garage/shed for at least 4 or 5 weeks if you can Let us know how you get on ... looking forward to photos too! nete92
Hi there, Thanks so much for your replies & concern. All 5 chicks are doing so well. They are kept in a separate part of the aviary away from other birds in a fairly sheltered spot. Mummy quail is fantastic! She let's them out for a brief scratch about then calls them back inside. I made them a ramp so they can get inside safely. I am keeping a close eye on the weather should I need to bring them in & have made sure there's minimal chance of them getting rained on. They are so cute! I'll post some pictures, but they don't stay still for long so may be a bit blurry. Not surprising, but my last quail were far tamer when incubated by us. Thanks again for your help.
