nannyhenny
Our Higgledy Piggledy developed a sneeze and raspy voice so took her to our vets yesterday (they are very good with hens) She diagnosed a mild upper respiratory infection and we have an antibiotic (Baytril) twice a day for a week. The vet says a total of 28 days before we can eat the eggs. This seems a long time; can it really stay in the system so long? ! Has anyone had any different advice on this? Also, I assume, we can't feed the cooked eggs back to the ladies for the same period? Incidentally, it cost £33 for the consultation and medication, including a very thorough all over check (including an internal - ouch!) and Higgledy takes it beautifully in mashed up grapes! Main problem is keeping the other two away while she's eating it!
Space Chick
Baytril has a 7 day withdrawal period after treatment ends.. So if you are giving for 7 days you need to withdraw from eating the eggs for 14 days. Some vets are overzealous with advice though... I know one vet told one girl that she could never eat the eggs again I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying this, but I have eaten eggs when the girls have been on antibiotics but I would never sell them to family and friends. I think the worry is we will get a resistance to the antibiotics or could have allergic reaction to the antibiotics.
