good news story

Recommended Posts

I have been lurking the forum for ages but never posted however thought some of you might be encouraged by a good news story. In the middle of August just before we went on holiday, my gold laced orp was attacked by the dog we were dogsitting for a friend. We had been so careful to keep her away from the chooks but she managed to sneak past my hubby as he opened the gate to the part of the garden where the chooks live. Amy was very badly mauled, had a huge bite mark about 5 inches across on her back and another smaller but deeper wound on her side. Later we also discovered a large droopy 'bag' of fluid under her chest. We had an emergency trip to the vet, who cleaned the wounds but could stitch them - too bit, so stitched a gauze pack over the worst one. We took her home expecting the worst but she made it through the night. A trip to our own vet the next day for review and she was put on Baytril and Metacam, plus betadine dabbed on the wounds. The only way we could get the meds into her was by cannulating dried mealworms, grapes and raisins so she didn't taste it as she was too poorly to syringe it in. Then we had to go away, leaving my 20 year old son to take on 'vet' duties while we were away. 5 weeks on she is back with the flock, although reintegration was a challenge (She was always bottom of the order and now injured as well as bottom)! Still has a bare patch on her back which may never be covered up so have got the stocks of gentian and anti-peck in which seem to be working. At the original vet visit he gave us the choice of having her pts and I am so glad we didn’t. All that handling and tlc has made her much more confident and friendly. The fluid ‘bag’ seems to be a stretched crop but doesn’t affect her in any way – we just massage it every now and then.

Let me be the first to say what a great story and how wonderful that you nursed her back to health. :)

I have never so far had to nurse one of mine thank goodness , but I would like to think I would do the same .

She must seem very special to you now., top of the flock in your eyes. :)

And when we put her back with the girls

Aww what a great story :D !

Glad she is okay now! I had a very nervous girl, but when she got ill and had to have her crop massaged she got used to us and is now so much friendlier! It made such a difference

P.S - You can't post photos until you have something like 5 posts :)
