Photo for new driving licence?

Recommended Posts

YS is applying for his provisional licence and has to send a photo (by post).

Nowhere on the DirectGov website can I find out if it has to be a "proper" photo, ie on photographic paper or if a good, printed paper copy is OK :? . Does anyone know?

We can go to a photobooth thingy if necessary but if a paper copy is allowed, I can get it sent off a lot quicker.

Vicki, if your laddie has a passport, you can do everything on - line. The dvla link up with the passport people & use the passport photo for his provisional license. Its much quicker. Jonathan used this method recently & I think the whole thing took about a week. Will pm you Elizabeths details when I find them. Alli x

Alli, I saw that option but as YS was about 10 at the time of his passport photo, I don't think he'd thank me for using that one  . Probably wouldn't be much good as ID either  .

On the form we've been sent it says "You still need to send a photo whether you gave us consent online to attempt to use the photo from your passport or not". Begs the question, what is the point of that option then  ?

I got a booklet with my form giving instructions on every step, including the photo, when I applied for my provisional. You might be able to pick up just the booklet from the post office? Though, it was basically the same rules that apply to passport photos plus the photo must have be no longer than a month old.

Mine came out quite well surprisingly! I'm the only one of my friends who isn't embarrassed my my driving licence photo

I want to change my name and can't do this online. Frustrating as I was the first year to have a photo license and had to renew when I hit 27. They did send me info on how this was better with the form.

I presume they won't accept a picture of me holding a chicken  I will probably send a new photo as need one for my passport anyway, although staying with the one from my 20s is tempting.

ES took a digital photo at home, cropped it to the right size and printed it on normal paper  I said it would be sent back because it was not on photo paper but they accepted it. I wouldn't recommend it thought, I think he was lucky not to have it refused. It did come back but only because he forgot to sign the form
