Ain't Nobody Here
YS is applying for his provisional licence and has to send a photo (by post). Nowhere on the DirectGov website can I find out if it has to be a "proper" photo, ie on photographic paper or if a good, printed paper copy is OK . Does anyone know? We can go to a photobooth thingy if necessary but if a paper copy is allowed, I can get it sent off a lot quicker.
whoopsie
It has to be a proper passport photo. Be warned though it won't look anything like him when the card comes - well mine doesn't!
Ain't Nobody Here
OK, thanks . I was tempted to let them use his passport photo but he was about 10 at the time .
snowberry
The annoying thing is that when you get your full license, you have to renew it evvery 10 years at a cost of £20ish *grump*
Ain't Nobody Here
Which is why I'm hanging onto my paper licence (which is 31 years old) .
snowberry
It's just another way for DVLA to make money! Otherwise, as you rightly say, you'd have to change yours!
chickencam
My daughter got her full one back today, with the same awful photo that was on her provisional, she looks like a ghost They do have to be passport photos. She is so pleased because she now has photo ID for her 18th birthday on Monday, she thought that she might have to take her passport out with her. sparkysmum
Vicki, if your laddie has a passport, you can do everything on - line. The dvla link up with the passport people & use the passport photo for his provisional license. Its much quicker. Jonathan used this method recently & I think the whole thing took about a week. Will pm you Elizabeths details when I find them. Alli x
Ain't Nobody Here
Alli, I saw that option but as YS was about 10 at the time of his passport photo, I don't think he'd thank me for using that one . Probably wouldn't be much good as ID either . On the form we've been sent it says "You still need to send a photo whether you gave us consent online to attempt to use the photo from your passport or not". Begs the question, what is the point of that option then ?
surfer_chicken
I got a booklet with my form giving instructions on every step, including the photo, when I applied for my provisional. You might be able to pick up just the booklet from the post office? Though, it was basically the same rules that apply to passport photos plus the photo must have be no longer than a month old. Mine came out quite well surprisingly! I'm the only one of my friends who isn't embarrassed my my driving licence photo
Cinnamon
I see some horrors at work, when id'ing people for alcohol purchases. Honestly, some of them are really hard to relate to the person standing in front of you. I got my eldests done in a booth - we needed new Passports & she needed more for University anyhow. chocchick
On the form we've been sent it says "You still need to send a photo whether you gave us consent online to attempt to use the photo from your passport or not". Begs the question, what is the point of that option then ? I want to change my name and can't do this online. Frustrating as I was the first year to have a photo license and had to renew when I hit 27. They did send me info on how this was better with the form. I presume they won't accept a picture of me holding a chicken I will probably send a new photo as need one for my passport anyway, although staying with the one from my 20s is tempting. Chucky Mama
ES took a digital photo at home, cropped it to the right size and printed it on normal paper I said it would be sent back because it was not on photo paper but they accepted it. I wouldn't recommend it thought, I think he was lucky not to have it refused. It did come back but only because he forgot to sign the form
PurpleTree
The photo on mine is still the original one from when I passed my test at 17 (i'm now 30) When I got married & changed my name they started the 10 years again, so it doesn't expire until next year. Looking forward to changing my photo.
Ain't Nobody Here
ES took a digital photo at home, cropped it to the right size and printed it on normal paper I'm sure I did that for ES's application but couldn't quite remember. I know I did for his student card! I've made sure YS signed the form .
