yoghurt

Recommended Posts

I have just started making my own yoghurt, a friend of mine gave me the recipe and now I am completely hooked. It makes gorgeous creamy yoghurt at a fraction of the cost of the shop bought stuff!! heres the recipe if anyone wants to have a go.

2 Litres of full fat milk

4 tbs of skimmed milk powder

2-4 tbs of bio yoghurt (as a starter)

Heat the milk in a saucepan until its just boiling. Remove from heat and leave to cool to blood temperature (until you can just hold your finger in it for the count of ten without it stinging) In a large wide necked thermos (lunch box style) put the milk powder and add cup of the milk, stir until smooth then add the yoghurt starter then sieve the remaing milk over the top. put the lid on and keep in a warm place overnight, by morning you will have lovely creamy yoghurt. I take out a couple of tablespoons from the middle and the hole then fills up with the whey, drain this off and the yoghurt gets even creamier, Yummy. If you havent got the right type of thermos you could just use a large kilner jar and wrap it in a towel and put it in the airing cupboard, I havent tried this but my friend assures me it works just the same.

If you want to make it again just reserve a few tablespoons of your yoghurt and use this as you next starter.

I make mine in a lakeland maker too, but I use a carton of UHT milk so no need to scald it. As a dieter (attempted) I use skimmed milk and that is just as successful just ask my 7 year old who often asks me to make it. He will have it on cereal instead of milk or as a pudding.

I use this yoghurt in sauces and in all manner of cooking. DH loves it in mashed potatoes instead of milk or butter. Yum yum

I think the Easiyo is more or less just a glorified Thermos flask. You fill it with hot water to create the heat needed to make the yoghurt. I don't see any reason why you couldn't make yoghurt in it using milk and a yoghurt starter, but I think it's really been designed to work with their own sachets. It's also a lot bigger than the Lakeland machine.

I have been using the Easiyo yoghurt maker for years, I have some on the go now.

The sachets of pre mix natural and flavoured yoghurt are very good. It takes about 8 hours to make the yoghurt and once refridgerated it will last for 2 weeks. It never lasts that long in this house so I bought an extra inner pot so there is always some ready. I have also made plain yoghurt using UHT milk and a couple of tablespoons of Yeo Valley yoghurt in the yoghurt maker. That is also good but I have found it only lasts a few days in the fridge and it has a more sharper sour taste than the easiyo natural yoghurt premix.

Using UHT milk to make yoghurt works out cheaper than the sachets but I prefer easiyo for the different flavours available. I buy the sachets from Lakeland and get them when they are on special offer.

I'm not sure the two items are directly comparable, IMHO what is best for will depend on how you will use it.

As Ali-s says whilst you can make yoghurt from plain milk in the easiyo, its real design is for their own products. So if you will use them, that would be the product for you. My friend has one, swears by it and like Ali always has one on the go. However when I looked at the products they didnt appeal to me and I thought they werent that economical. For my uses it would be a glorified thermos flask but if you'll use the products then go for it.

I dont know why Ali-s milk yoghurt doesnt last as long as the Easiyo. My yoghurt lasts forever in my fridge. You can easily make it flavoured by adding fruits, jams, muesli, coulis etc.

I hope that helps

Today i finally went and got a yoghurt maker. In the end i decided on the Easiyo for several reasons.

The countless flavours available. The absolute ease of just mixing a packet with water. The fact that i can make a 'normal' yoghurt without a packet if i want to and that i can put it anywhere while its 'working' and not where i happen to have a socket, which are few and far between in my kitchen and all already in use anyway.

I have already made some up, it will be ready before bed tonight when i will put it in the fridge until morning and then...........hopefully.........have some delicious yoghurt ready

Thanks for all your views and comments and sorry Loumabel for nicking your thread, but i intend to try your 'recipe' in my easiyo too :D

I have an EasiYo and whilst I love the yoghurt it makes, I'm having trouble with mine not setting that well anymore. Now I'm not sure if that's down to maybe the EasiYo "flask" itself not holding the heat as well as it used to or what, any suggestions, anyone?

My main reason for using it is to avoid the yoghurt pot mountain I end up with otherwise, I can't recycle them where I live so I'd rather make DIY yoghurt and put it in lock and lock or similar pots to take to work 8)

I can get the Easiyo yoghurt to set in 8 hours if the kitchen is warm. The batch I made yesterday evening had 13 hours in the flask, when I took it out this morning it had set very well. I always make sure the yoghurt mix and water are mixed and ready to put in the flask before I boil the kettle so that the water is boiling as I put it all in the flask.
