monstermunch
This morning I went to let my chickens out as usual, but when I opened the coop there were hundreds of what look like small woodlice crawling all over the inside. I've not noticed this before so I think they must have moved in overnight. I checked my girls over and they didn't seem to have anything on them, mite-powdered them just in case, cleaned the coop and sprinkled mite powder through the bedding; is there anything else I should do at this stage? The pesky little things were all hiding out in the nooks and crannies, so I've removed as many as possible, this is where an Eglu would be a better option but alas can't afford such luxury!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
chestnutmare
Can you find these lice online to find out what they are? I'd say keep cleaning your housing and powdering your girls. How about some Diatom? Search for it at the Omlet shop. "Diatomaceous Earth is a fine white powder made of the ground up fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of algae). It's 100% natural and it works because at a microscopic level the powder is very absorbent and effectively dehydrates parasites it comes into contact with causing them to shrivel up and expire. It can be used to control both internal and external parasites."
The Dogmother
I'd take it apart, wash with Total Mite ill Concentrate and dust with Buz Busters. Repeat this every 3 days until they are gone, then just use those products in your weekly clean and dust. That'll get rid of the critters in the housing, then just be sure to set up a good preventative and spraying routine with your girls; there are details in the lice and mites sticky in chicken clinic.
