memphisto
Hello, After much deliberation between Silkies, Bantams, Hybrids, Ex-Batts, we came to the conclusion last night that as we now have another coop which isn't currently being used, we would get two hybrids today after looking online, I thought a barred rock pair would be nice, so we set about trying to find some last night with no luck. OH was messing about most of the morning, frustrating me because I wanted to ring and find some but he was on and off the phone and my mobile was getting no signal at all! After about 4 hours of nagging him, I rang Acre House in Wrexham and they had 4 barred rocks, so my mind was made up and off we went. Well, I took one glimpse of a beautiful white star they had and that was it, I had to take her home, she's now called Lexi and is joined by her Barred Rock 'sister', Ruby. Absolutely beautiful chickens there and I would highly recommend anyone in this area to go there, I could talk 'chicken' with them all day, I fell in love with a huge amount of chickens there and even OH is saying 'maybe we'll have to pop back next year'. Anyway, traffic was quite heavy on the way back so we got back once the others were already in bed, so set up the new coops and they've gone up to bed already, so we've not seen them yet but they'll be out in their pens tomorrow whilst the others free range, going to do it properly this time! So, here they are: Lexi (who had a bit of a poop bath in the box by the looks of it!) Ruby They didn't fancy anything to eat before heading to bed and the coop has a blanket over for the fireworks noise we expect tonight, the other girls have an old duvet cover! Hopefully will get some better pictures tomorrow Edited November 10, 2011 by Guest

memphisto
Oh no Redwing, not at all, I love learning from this forum as I'm just starting out, so any advice/corrections/anything is so much appreciated Eggs wise, I wasn't too sure about laying abilities of either of the new birds but we have them as pets/family rather than prolific egg layers, the eggs are a lovely bonus but the hens are part of the family

memphisto
They've certainly made their mark today.... Ruby jumped from the coop to the shed, Lexi has been re-named by my son, who was saying Lexi but it was coming out as something I don't want a two year old coming out with and this afternoon he said she was Lottie, so she's Lottie now Lottie also went flighty today, flying up to the neighbours extention, she came down but gave us a fright I'm going to have to get Lotties wings clipped, I'm too nervous to do it for myself for the first time, I'm hoping the vet nurse will do it for me tomorrow and show me what to do so I can do it myself in the future for any other birds we get. I didn't realise how flighty and nippy white stars are. Other girls have come to have a look at them but haven't tried to peck them through the bars of their pen nor have they attempted to clambered over my home made garden divider to get to them and vice versa when they had some FR time today

Chortle Chook
Ruby looks lovely. Lottie is obviously giving you the 'love me, love my poop' test Is she doing drier poops now she has settled down? By the way, 'next year' is only two months off . . . redcharlie43
Congrats on the new girls. They are very pretty. My white sussex is very flighty too. I clipped her wings but it has made not a bit of difference. She uses the door of the cube as a ladder and then stands on top of the run looking smug. On her first night with us she had to be retrieved from a 10 foot bramble bush in the dark by my OH I am hoping that when she gets fatter she will be too heavy for all that. Clipping the wings for the first time is nerve wracking I agree. It took me nearly a year and loads of research before I bit the bullet. The thought is worse than actually doing it !! memphisto
Just thought I'd update with a few pics and just to ask a few Q's Lottie, the white star is exceptionally timid, she's like roadrunner if you come anywhere near her, we put her in the coop and opened the roof, shut the entry door and tried gently to stroke her, but she got very upset so had to open the door again, she's not interested in treats at the moment either but eats well from the feeder and forages. Will she always be as timid or will she become friendlier over time? How big do white stars get, am I right in thinking she might be smaller than the hybrids we have? Latest pics, pleas excuse the wheely bin in the pics, it was bin day when I took the pics! Lottie sticking close the the pen With Dilys, who's taken to being 'Mum' Dilys & Penny show the littlies how dustbathing is done Ruby off for a wander
redcharlie43
They are sooooo lovely. What breed is Ruby? I think I want one.....OR TWO..
Snowy
You might find that Lottie calms down a little when she comes into lay, but don't hold your breath Whitestars are notoriously scatty and nervy - I've had several and they have never been friendly. They are comical though - very inquisitive and chatty. Yours are both lovely girls
memphisto
She's a barred rock, I think (though not 100%) they are known also as a Plymouth Rock. She has lovely markings, I think you should get 2 or 3...or 4, why not go the whole hog and get 5, 5's a nice number!
memphisto
Thanks Snowy. It's not an issue for us if she wants to avoid us like the plague, as long as she's happy FR in the garden, she can do as she pleases, just wondered if she was still a bit out of sorts from the change of home or whether it's in the breed, really enjoying learning about them here. Kazzy73
What beautiful new girls, love the colour of Ruby she sooooo pretty,I have a light sussex thats very skitish and freaks at anything and flaps and runs around honking like a goose??my other light sussex is dopey, very friendly and loves being picked up (except at the mo shes moulting so she hates being picked up)but its strange how the same breed can be so different so you never know your Lottie will become friendlier once she gets to know you
