No, not this time. The local antique centre  . I went looking for something to spend my birthday money on and came out clutching that, a vintage Spong mincer for a friend and some lovely old bits and bobs including a Nutbrown Grapefruit corer, pastry wheel and a smashing green tomato chopper too  . Poor LSH just went  and carried the box to the car for me  . Just about everything in the kitchen is now green and cream including the lovely green 40s Beryl dinner service we're eating off  .

My wife would say most of my clothes date back further than other stuff. I did have the suit I got married in (33 yrs ago) until fairly recently when the Boss threw it out and I didn't manage to retrieve it. It had wide bell bottomed trousers and 2 inch turnups - oh and wide lapels. It was great.

I glance in the outside rubbish bin every time I pass to make sure my stuff isn't in there - I retrieved a pair of jeans only yesterday. They were ones my son threw away only about 6 or 7 years ago and I retrieved them on that occasion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them - they are just a bit worn, but my beloved decided that she would try to sneak them out.

You have to be vigilant you know ....

Him Indoors has a raincoat that he had as a sixth former.

Trouble is....he was 6ft and 9 stone then. He's 6ft and 15 stone now, so the remaining button doesn't fasten.

He also has a dinner suit that is at least 30 years old.

Hey - I'd forgotten my dinner suit. That must be over 30 years old too. Mind you I haven't worn it for donkey's years. Your husband and I would obviously cut quite a dash if we went out ...... Especially since I am a towering 5' 6". My wife would no doubt refuse to be seen with me in my DJ these days!

When i met my hubby, he had these very disgusting cowboy shoes - pointy toes with buckles!!!! I thought they were so disgusting & a bit camp & desperately wished he'd stop wearing them. ~ they hadn't invented crocs then..

He does a bit of DJ ing and thought these shoes were so so cool.

So when we had a bomfire - I sort of built the fire round the shoes. They were so ancient they needed burning. He was still living in the 1980's! Left to him he would have still had a Human leaguee hairdo!

I have never forgot those shoes - hope they never become fashionable again!

my mother still uses her mother-in-laws secateurs, and my mum is now 77!

my brother and I both wore little cotton handmade baby dresses made by my grandmother for my father (and her other 4 boys) from 1928 onwards. (they lived in Burma when my father was born in 1928, then India; my brother and I were in Australia and Singapore respectively when babies).

my brother and I were both christened in family lace dresses (prob late 1800s) - by the time I got my first christened, at 5 mths old she was already way too big for them!

I still have all the little dresses and the christening robes, wrapped in tissue paper - I had them specially cleaned at the Hampton Court school of needlework about 15 years ago. bit silly really, coz I dont think they'll ever be used again, but they are beautiful and I wanted to protect them.

I have a 'Good Housekeeping' cookbook, that my grandmother gave my mum as an engagement present way back. It teaches you how to boil an egg! we also have the family christening gown, which was first worn in 1886, and has been worn by every child on my fathers side since. It's an amazing gown, made from silk and lace, and just beautiful. :D

I've got old family Christening robes too, not as old as yours I don't think but both have seen several generations of wear. In fact it was quite difficult because when son was born I immediately got offered hubby's family's & my family's Christening robes, and I'd never known about the existence of either  Luckily we chose to have Seb christened in his Dad's gown, and then when I followed up with a daughter she wore mine so both family's were satisfied. I never dared have a 3rd baby though :lol::lol::lol:

I've somehow become guardienne of both robes, they're in the loft, lovingly wrapped in layers of tissue and pillowcases, I just hope they stat nice just in case my children or any of their cousins ever want them.

acid free tissue paper is the thing apparently - I think that just means white tissue paper. you are supposed to fold it into the garment, and then wrap them in more tissue paper and put them in a box to keep the light out. Hampton court did it all wonderfully, with little wodges of tissue paper to keep the arms the right shape and stuff, but an awful faff to put back again when youve taken it all out to have a look!

if anyone is interested, I paid about £120 to have 2 sets of silk antique robes and about 20 cotton lawn baby dresses professionally cleaned (and I think possibly some restoration). admittedly it was 15 years ago, so its prob gone up a fair bit, but I think well worth it for the peace of mind for something special.

I'm not sure that all white tissue paper is acid free - I think it should say so specifically if it is acid free. Some white paper just goes brown, and thats when its not acid free.

I have my mums 2 bridesmaid dresses that she wore when her 2 sisters got married, in original boxes from the 1950s. They are wonderful, one is lilac and the other is pink satin. I used to be able to fit in them & can remember dressing up in them when I was younger. Acid free tissue is off white in colour rather like natural linen, it is good & keeps clothes stain free for years, my degree was in Heritage Management and part of it was the conserving of clothes etc.. I love old things and have my grandmas watch, plus her sunday best jewellery as she used to call it.

All this talk of dresses has reminded me of a dress handed down in my family - a beautiful white lawm handstitched dress with a sash, puffed sleeves and blue smocking on the yoke. I have pictures of my mother, me and Rosie all wearing it as babies of about 6 months. Rosie has asked me to keep it for her little girls.

Me....I can't believe id did it!

I'm hoping they will enjoy the same fate as Clarets family dress.

They are gorgeous even though I say so myself.

Couldn't resist showing you the two smocked dresses I made for my daughter. ( She's 25 now!)

All the pictures of her wearing them are pre digital so I would have no idea how to show you them.

I'm hoping they will become family heirlooms one day and will be worn by my great grand daughters!
