egg famine.......

Recommended Posts

As I'm only getting one egg from my 19 chooks I just thought i'd double check i'm doing everything I should.

My chooks are all ages, some are too young to lay, some old, and some of course lay off over the winter. But some of my hybrids haven't laid since July, mostly Jasmines/Skylines/Columbines....

Do they stop over winter? Are there any reasons for them not to lay, they are wormed regularly with flubenvet, they are fed on Fancy feed and have some green stuff during the day.....

Any advice?

Thanks

K

1 out of 19 is tough!

My newbies, who were POL in October, are all laying, as is Violet who was POL in the summer. However Valerie my Heritage Skyline who was new in the summer only laid for a couple of months then had a tiny mini moult and hasn't come back into lay since. My other 4 are now 3 years old, 2 hybrids are moulting so definitely not laying and the other 2 are pure breeds so have stopped for the winter. So I'm getting 3 or 4 eggs most days out of the 9.

Food wise they have warm chicken layers mash with spinach first thing, then just their layers mash for the remainder of the day, and a couple of wire hanging bird cages filled with spring green and broccoli. They don't get corn during the week because we aren't here to give it to them before bed, but they have a treat of corn at weekends when they also get to free range.

Hope they start laying again for you soon :)

None of mine have laid since August!! They all went into moult, then the nights started drawing in, and now, frankly, I think they've forgotten what to do

They were all a year old in June, so just over 18 months old now, so I am very much hoping that their egg laying days aren't over already

Tagging on the end here, as it's a similar question/plea.

I have two hybrids (got them from omlet in 2009), one marans and a cream legbar (these are both a bit younger).

Last July, they were producing around 3 a day, between them (yay!), then I went on holiday, and since then there has been a famine. My wonderful little legbar is the only one laying at all at the moment: she's giving me around 6 a week. The rest are on strike.

I'm not too surprised about the hybrids, but would have thought the marans should have been laying.

They are regularly wormed etc., and fed on layers pellets. In a WIR, so no chance they are hiding them anywhere.

Is it possible they may lay again, or should I just give up all hope???
