Back from the Brackley rehome today

Recommended Posts

I now have my four Christmas girls, Holly, Ivy, Mary and Joseph(ine). Very well feathered I have to say and calm too. They haven't ventured out yet, so I shut the pop hole at 3 as didn't fancy crawling around in the dark, trying to get them to bed. Have one nasty bully, so be glad when they are in the run with more space and more feeders. Can see me down Pets at Home tomorrow for anti-peck spray, along with Vaseline on the combs.

My biggest worry is water in the coop. I have a pot that is hooked on the side, so hope they can share it ok. Doesn't matter what I put the water in, they spill it and then they are sitting on a wet floor all night.

Anyone else rehomed today?

 Well done Millie-Annie. I should've taken some as I have Snowy's empty yellow Go, but I am looking after Mum with a hip replacement.

Well done all the Omlet helpers.

Hi Redwing, I was there at 11am, so which nice person were you? I spoke to several. I was the pain that wanted the Aubiose, but didn't have any money  I was really grateful to Anna and the cheque is in the post as we speak.

Looking after your mum is a full time job Wolfie. Chickens can wait until next time. Hope she recovers well xx

:oops: Sorry I am going to embarrass myself completely now :oops::oops: What is Brackley?:oops:

Brackley is a small town, my parents lived there for the last years of their life so when we got our ex batts there was only one place to go ................... Brackley :D I also met my OH there :D

The rehoming people there are brilliant so helpful although I had had chooks for a couple of years I was very worried about the extra care needed to look after ex batts. But they answered all my questions and helped to put my mind at rest. The day itself was so well organised :D

Picked up two ex batts yesterday

Terrible weather today for their first day of freedom though. The poor girls look so confused.

I've only seen one on them eat, and neither of them drink so far though. They're on ex-batt crumb. I haven't been out as often as I'd would've though due to the rain.

They also stand right up against the eglu run looking at my other chickens and poking their combs through the bars, so they have been pecked a few times :( I've put vaseline on their combs to try and help, but it would be so much easier if they would just move away from the sides rather than let my other devils peck away at them :roll:

Otherwise they have lovely temperaments and I've really enjoyed wasting time watching them explore :D

How have yours got on today millie-annie?

EDIT:

I just put them to bed and they both had empty crops, all my other chickens always go to bed with full crops. I only saw George eat today, which was this morning when I let them out, and even then it was only a few beakfuls. Should I be worried? It's my first lot of exbatts so I'm a little paranoid. Their food and water is in the standard grub and glug.

When we got out ex batts from Brackley during the phone calls prior to collection I was told that they get on with the glugs ok but do not like the grubs something about having to put their heads in to get the food.

We got them one of like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Savic-Violet-Plated-Chicken-Feeder/dp/B003XLEBD0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1325178674&sr=8-6

We got it from Welland Valley Feeds in Market Harborough. I still put their crumbs in the grub too and they gradually got used to it and now I don't use the metal feeder.

Hi I put the crumb in the hopper but I also throw some on the floor of the coop for them. I opened the pop hole this morning and went back an hour later expecting them to be out but only one was. I looked inside and realised one of them had the other two pinned against the back wall and every time they tried to move she attacked them. I do usually leave them to sort it out for themselves but I did move her and put her outside. The other two then started to eat and drink. They never did venture out, but hopefully tomorrow. Not to sure what to do about bully bird. I have a couple of feeders and waterers but not much good if she won't even let them move. I may have to isolate her completely if it carries on.

Try not to worry too much about them would be my advice. They are tough old birds and generally will sort themselves out.
