I hesitate to raise the subject...but the olympics

Recommended Posts

Now there's a thought! The images in my head right now... High Jump - over the netting supposed to be keeping them in, 100m sprint - to the terrified cat at the end of the track... How many mealworms can you eat in 30seconds... Now this sounds like fun!!!

At least we won't have to stay up till daft o'clock to watch events live. I am still disgusted at the vandalisation of the Manor Garden alltoments to make way for the site. Ok so they are going to be reinstated after the event, but .....

I do like the track and field events, so will probably watch ....as long as they are not rained off. :roll:

I will enjoy watching some of the sporting events - as I would at any Olympic Games.

However, I am cross about the amount of money being spent on the Olympics, which I am certain won't be recouped by tourists coming to watch the games. I am also irked about the fact that Greenwich Park is being hacked about to accommodate the equestrian events, it's a totally unsuitable location and could easily have been held in many of the far more suitable venues that already host 3 day events in this country. Many other events are being held outside of London so this could too. We also already have lots of great sporting venues in this country, so why do we need to build a big, expensive Olympic stadium (that no-one seems to want/be able to afford to buy afterwards!)? :?

Why do we as a nation insist on seeing the negative in most things! Britain is fantastic! I am British and Proud, and know that we can pull this off and look forward to Britain being in the global limelight for the weeks of the Olympics and Para-Olympic games!!

I totally agree! The Olympics, a great international sporting event in my home city :D, I cant wait and I have got tickets too :dance:

So long since I was there.

Where are you going and is there room for me in your suitcase?

Going with the school for 3 weeks to Malawi, will be renovating some local schools and also going on a safari :D

They may as well be on another planet as far as I'm concerned. What will the northern half of the country benifit from them? Sage
Might as well be happening in a different country as far as I'm concerned :roll: .

:wink:

Well fellow omleteers, although I know this is surprising :shock: I have it on good authority that many Americans (and other nationalities) coming over for the games will not be staying in London because of the terrorist threat and one lot are apparently chartering a train every day from York :shock: and that rentals even as far away as Edinburgh are on the up!! I guess the distances just don't mean as much if you are used to larger scale countries...

Personally, I think the terrorist threat will be quite low, due to the high amount of security the Olympics will have, there will be police, marines and SAS protecting London.

We're on holiday on the south coast for the first week but I'll be making time to watch the diving, I love that. Mr Griffin has the second week off work especially so I imagine we'll be glued to the telly for much of it :lol: We did apply for tickets for diving and three day eventing but didn't get any :cry:

Sorry Fred....I should have said "the perceived terrorist threat" I absolutely agree with the point you are making...the difficulty is persuading visitors when they have already been exposed to negative press etc.....Still at least the whole country gets a bit more benefit...and public transport too! :D

Why cross? If you would watch it regardless of the country it is operating in, then clearly, for you, it is a case of loyalty? The fact it is being represented in your own country, and knowing the history of the last time it was held here, should be a matter of national pride, even if you do not see the economic value of it. The revenue isn't simple generated from those who pay to be present at the events (tourism). The revenue is also generated by:-

[list=]advertising rights

selling recording/broadcasting rights

internal flights

hotel revenue

private rental revenue

internal travel revenue

prestige revenue

local business revenue

which all contribute to business tax and VAT to boost our *nations* economy (at a time when it is flagging!)

and so much more besides :wink: (think: t-shirts, banners, flags, food, drinks, programmes, momentoes, pens, bookmarks, notepads, postcards, stamps, etc., etc.!

For those who are skeptical about the business case, I suggest you read up in the business advantages - not just in the short term, but in the longer term when UK plc is competing in a GLOBAL market! :wink:

This is a fantastic opportunity at a time of Global recession when we compete in a global business ethos.

I have yet to see a valid argument (other than pure opinion) as to why we cannot/will not recoup our investment???

Totally agree.

Plus, we have a history of terrorism and our endeavours to prevent/minimise impact which will stand us in good stead.

Equally, we have technology in place which gives us an advantage but is not widely published - which gives us an upper hand in prevention.

Those who think counterwise are scare-mongering at best, or, buying into the threat of fear, at worst. Do not let fear distort your reasoning - because that is the very basis of terrorism: letting your fears rule your reasoning :wink:

I apologise once again for my inaccurate wording in my earlier post...I have amended it (see above) and I certainly didn't mean to imply that I felt that the games should be avoided because of the threat of terrorism. that is not my personal view..merely the view of the americans in question who will not be staying in London....
