Prolapse or something else

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I noticed Penny was not happy. She was out freeranging but seemed uncomfortable walking and was not not joining in with the others. Her bottom was filthy. I bought her inside and gave her a wash. I noticed that something was coming out of her vent. Its not a full on prolapse, but more like a piece of stretchy pale skin.

She has spent the night in the kitchen as I wanted to keep her apart from the other girls just in case it was a prolapse and they had a go at her. I washed her again this am and put honey on her vent (recommended on a website so no idea whether this was right or not) The skin bit was dry at the end, but I noticed some redness to the inside of the vent

She is pooing without apparent pain and it eating and drinking OK. No sign of mite. Just a bit down in the dumps and bot her usual chirpy self (Should say she is an ex Batt 3.5 - 4 years old and has been laying up till now)

All advise welcome please

I have one girl Eva with similar problems. Eva is a young girl though .I think it is what they call a lash , but some one else has probably got more knowledge than me.

Eva was poorly last week after "laying" several of these , staying under the hedge and looking very poorly. but has perked up since. No eggs for a week but 2 days running soft eggs.

i am as worried as you . Sorry I can't be more help.

Sorry to hear you also have a poorly chook. I don't think is it lash as there is no fatty egg / deposit. I have massaged her all over and she is soft to the touch and have just very gently inserted my finger into the vent and there is no blockage of either poo or egg. She has perked up from having a night in the warm kitchen, so I think I will leave her in again tonight. She does not have peritonitis I think as the poo is OK and is not foul smelling.

If you've checked her for retained egg and shell then it may be a bit of lining but I've found that is red and bleeds.

I still feel it may be egg membrane, have you tried gently pulling it should come away. I would use some purple spray or antiseptic on her vent before and after examining to prevent introducing infection.

Hope she's brightened up, poor old girl
