Vent (bottom) problem

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Got a problem with our white star hybrid hen. She is about 2 years old.

She has bled from her vent but i cannot see any open wound (found a small drop of blood on coop floor), appears bunged up, vent area looks bruised, vent area is messy with pooh. Other hens were pecking her vent area.

I have now moved her from (cube green) to (orange eglu) in isolation and have just given her some grated apple so she can eat and it may clear any blockage (just a guess).

What else can i do?

Is is just a waiting game for nature to decide either way?

All suggestions welcome please.

Regards

Oat

You have certainly done the right thing by isolating her as the others will continue to peck her otherwise.

Next step is to try to determine the damage to her vent. If it is just superficial wounds she may be OK. However you need to be prepared for the fact that she may have had a prolapse and they will have pecked it away. If you can get her cleaned up and check her over, I would. Otherwise I think a trip to the vet is in order to determine the extent of the damage. :(

Hi

Vet said it is not prolapse, but at the same time didn't really know what it was. Gave antibiotics and said to see how she is in a few days and that she though she 'may' pull through.

The only thing i can think of is that she is bunged up, we gave them left over rice (i think last weekend) and this chook was rather greedy on it. Vet however said she didn't appear to be bunged up.

Fingers crossed - will see how she is in a few days....

We have just cleaned her vent area and applied sudocrem. It seems that the vent has a tear at the side, this may have been due to a shellless egg and the other chooks have pecked on the white and yolk from the back of the chook? This also explains why she isn't 'trying' to pooh, it must hurt her alot, the feaces are just dribbling through. So atleast we now know what it is. My fear is that she will get infected even though the vet gave a an antibiotic injection yesterday - it can only be effective for so long.

Any other advise is welcome.

Hi All

Well we thought she might pull through as the wounds began to heal up and she had a good appetite. Yesterday however we noticed her comb was turning blue and her vent was leaking a clear liquid. Off to the vets we went knowing the next move was a ticket to the big hen house in the sky.

With her only being 2 years old it was difficult to say goodbye but we took comfort that she had lived in great conditions with us which hopefully she enjoyed as much as we enjoyed her and her eggs.

RIP Tellula
