Parsley
Hi I am a very happy chicken lady as my very first hatch has resulted in five out of five Two little chickies arrived yesterday morning so should come out of the incubator now. Two arrived yesterday evening and the last one a few hours ago. Would it be ok to take out the two older ones for the brooder because the 24 hours is up and leave all the others and take them out this evening. The youngest will have only been in there 12 hours but should be dry by then. Also, should I leave the shells in or out when I take out the eldest. Thank you for your help, this is such a brilliant forum Wendy - very proud first time chick mummy
Daphne
Congratulations Your plan is a good one for taking the chicks out as a pair and trio Remember to dip their beaks in water in the brooder so they know where/how to drink and also in the food although the youngest may not be interested till all the egg is absorbed. I'd take out any large bits of easy-to-get-hold-of shell now, but I wouldn't dally as the youngster is drying off and doesn't want to catch a chill. Redwing
If the incubator is a large-ish one (20 eggs plus) then I would whip the chicks out If its a small or cheap machine then I would leave them in as those machines are so much slower to recover humidity, the 24hr thing isnt a strict necessity and chicks are usually ok for longer - in fact in the USA newly hatched chicks regularly get sent by post with no food or water!
