MissPug+Chooks
Feeling rubbish because we've decided to put Hoppy chicken to sleep. Some of you will be aware of the trials and tribulations of Hoppy - at 6months she survived a fox attack and managed to cope hopping around on one leg. She then started getting bullied and Was stripped by the other chickens to the point of having blood drawn and now she cannot be free ranged with any chickens as they all attack her now. She has got to the point where she cannot scratch around, she has now stopped laying, and she has to be kept in isolation so she isnt attacked. She now just huddles up and looks really sad. Before all of the bullying she was laying and looked really happy but now she just looks misearble and in pain...so we are taking her to the vet when it opens on Tuesday...someone tell me i'm making the right decision! feel so sad ...this will leave me with one chicken now....sad times. Tweety
I'm very sorry to hear that, but it sounds as if you may not have much choice. Her quality of life is not good, and unlikely to improve, and if she is hunched and miserable then I agree that you have made the right decision. She has done very well to manage for so long on one leg, but the bullying has obviously been the final straw. It is always a hard decision to make, but we can only do what we think is best for our hens, and that is what you are doing.

Plum
Poor Hoppy you are doing the final best thing for her. Hugs for you.x
Chicken shack
Could you not get her rehomed with other special needs girls. BHWT have special need hens perhaps they can help. However what ever you decide you have done well to get her this far.
MissPug+Chooks
Turns out shes decided to get better! Hoppy was prancing abut (one legged) this morning literally singing and dancing! What a recovery! Maybe she was just having a down day?! Got 2 new Pekins that are going to be her friends. Think what I'll do it once Hoppy's feathers have all grown back is introduce her to the pekins through FR and then they can all live in the WIR and I will boot out the bully into a segregation run for a week or so then re-introduce her into the flock which will hopefully mean that she'll have to find her place back in the flock....fingers crossed that will work!!! x

Tweety
That is great news! I hope she will be very happy with her new friends
staceychristie
Not only cats that have 9 lives then! Good news. Just be careful when introducing them, as hoppy (obviously) will be at a massive disadvantage. I've used a water pistol to stop any fights breaking out when 2 sets of BHWT girls were eyeing each other up - They don't mind the rain, but hate the squirt of a well aimed shot of water Good luck.
