Wheezy chicken

Recommended Posts

Last night, our little wyandotte bantam was sounding awful - a rattly, wheezy noise when she breathed. Not been able to get close enough to her to listen this morning (seems unfair to get her out into the pouring rain). Still eating happily and looks like she's thinking of laying an egg this morning though. She's not in the best condition, as she gets bullied by one of the others and is a bit thin.

Should we be worried?

None of the local vets will look at a chicken.

well you can put some citricidal in the water, or some coloidal silver, however you do need to find a vet if not for this time but you are bound to at some point in time...

Wheezy and chesty "can" be very nasty and require antibiotics, which you will only get from a vet.

If you post your location, maybe someone will suggest one, or have you looked in the recommended vets section?

Also the British vet association have a site where you can search AND..... the Chivken Vet website

has a very comprehensive list of chook friendly vets.

Good Luck

It may be the receptionist at the vet who says they don't treat chickens why not enquire again. You could have a chance to discuss the antibiotics you have with a vet. Check the expiry date on them and have they been stored dry and cool?

If you have no luck you could ring the breeder and enquire about what they gave you. They could have a problem with the flock like Myco. You need a long enough course for them to be effective and strong enough dose otherwise you could be building up problems for the future.

Hope you get help.

She carried on being quite happy, eating and laying, so we used flubenvet to treat her for gape worm, as this seemed to be the only thing that could cause her symptoms without making her poorly. Seems to have worked, thankfully!

Thanks for the vet links above - did find a vet who sees chickens, but as its a reasonable distance off and they weren't available at weekends, we weren't able to take her. Good to know for any future emergencies, though.
