wrighty_1977
Hi We have finished building our Run and took ownership of our three new girls on Sunday morning (3 x Reds). They are POL so we are not expecting them to lay just yet and are just enjoying watching them get used to their new home. Quick question - so I need to put in the laying box a fake egg or is that a waste of time? And can it not just be a hard boiled egg with a cross on it? Your advice would be most welcome. Cheers Paul
Olly
I wouldn't bother - when they are ready to lay, they seem to instinctively know that the nest box is the place for it. Some people use fake eggs, but I've never bothered and they always lay in the right place. The problem with a hard-boiled egg is that it could be some time before they lay, it might go off! Purplemaniacs
I would wait and see where they lay, if you find they lay somewhere else try a fake egg but as Olly said they seem to know where to lay. My first omlet girls laid on the bars and then I put a couple of china eggs in the nest and that seemed to work, some people use golf balls too. wrighty_1977
OK, thanks for your advice. I will wait and see where and when they lay and take it from there. Thanks again, really useful. Paul
