Can't believe what I've read?!

Recommended Posts

I've just been reading my chicken mag on the question and answer page and someone asked if you can feed your chickens s"Ooops, word censored!" food eg veg! Well apparently according to DEFRA you can't even backyard chickens?! If you buy it specifically for the chicken and it doesn't go through your domestic kitchen they can have it but if it has been in your kitchen they can't as it could of come into contact with meat?! Is it me or is this crazy? I've been giving my chicks bits of greens that are starting to loose colour and now I realise I'm breaking the law?!

so grapes that have been in my kitchen that we eat, we can't take some out to the chickens? Because they could have come in contact with meat?

Am I missing something? That sounds ludicrous.

Is there more to this than I'm not privy too? Does this only apply if you're attempting to sell eggs?

It's a cover all rule, to be taken with a dose of common sense.

Chucks need protein, my girls will eat mice and frogs given the chance!

If I buy cauli for the girls, and choose to eat the insides and hang up the outer leaves , who is eating the leftovers?

My girls get beef fat, I only ever give away my eggs and its not often we have spares and there is definitely no cross contamination.

What really annoys me is I am starting a new business which will create veg waste, cauli leaves, mushroom peel that sort of thing. Even with no meat I cannot give my cuttings away. What a waste :(
