chickencam
Are anyone else's children affected by the closed roads for the Olympic torch relay when they have to be at school for GCSE exams? Luckily my DS's school is not directly affected, but the traffic that morning will be awful and his bus may have to run early or we will have to take him ourselves. The school that my daughters go to is completely marooned by closed roads and they are going to have to walk in from a car park about half a mile away. surfer_chicken
I don't think we are this year, but I have been affected by snow during my January exams a few years ago. It was combined with roadworks for the roads around my school, so the traffic was terrible. Several mornings during those three weeks we had to get off the bus and walk in order not to miss our exams, and always beat the bus to school. Just try to leave in plenty of time to account for possible delays. They are better off getting to school early then arriving to their exams stressed and panicked. I hope their exams go well. Our daughters are at the same school - it is impacting on AS & A level students as well. Originally they were told they had to be at school by 6am for their morning exams, after another head teacher went to the press and arranged a meeting with the police the 'compromise' arrangement is to be dropped off half a mile away and be escorted by police - the olympic tourch makes the school an island at a critical time - it passes around it between 8 & 9 am, with road closures 2 hours in advance. That is better than being at school by 6am, but can you believe it wasn't even consider as an issue before the school raised it!! chickencam
I can't belive that this wasn't taken into consideration, it is beyond comprehension Who ever thought that it would be a good idea to close a large number of roads leaving schools cut off before 9am I have no idea. Good luck to your girls Tracy, I am considering keeping mine off that day, the youngest is yr8 and the eldest can use it as a revision day at home, she is currently doing her art A2 exam but the rest of her A2's don't start until June. We will probably take DS into school ourselves early unless we get a reassurance from the bus company that they are making allowences for this, although he is normally at school by 8.05am so he may be ok. We will ask around and keep an eye on the situation. On the plus side we do live close by to where the relay will be passing through, so we should get to see it the evening before. Mine has an exam that afternoon and has been told 'it should be ok' to get there for an afternoon exam - 3 of her friends have an exam that morning and are looking at sleepovers with a friend who lives in the same road as the school - remember the same issue exists for the teachers and exam staff.
