Home required for our noisey chicken!

Recommended Posts

Can anyone offer a home to our rather noisey White Star chicken, Blanche? She is approx 9 months old and a superb layer - usually laying 6 eggs a week, with pure white shells (which look lovely nestling in the basket alongside the brown eggs supplied by our other chooks). Unfortunately, Blanche has taken to 'crowing' rather loudly anytime between 4-7am almost every morning and since we live in close proximity to several sets of neighbours (not to mention the fact that she is disturbing our sleep patterns somewhat) we need to rehome her (preferably to someone without near neighbours!). We know that she will probably hush-up as the mornings get darker, but since it is only July, that could be a long time off yet and we have been monitoring the crowing for several weeks already in the hope that she might quit, but no, so we've decided that she has to go :( . She is quite a small chook, but her eggs are a standard size. Apart from her vocal capacity, she can also be easily startled and runs around like the proverbial headless chicken, but she's lovely all the same! We live in Henley-on-Thames - can anyone help us!!??

Sorry to hear about Blanche!

I'm sure that someone will be along shortly and give her a good home!

Is she locked in the eglu at night or do you leave the door open? I'm sure that someone on here would leave theirs locked up til 7.30ish and then let them out. It stopped the 'crowing'.

We tried locking her in, but she just crows from inside the pod and also later on when let out! Also, it doesn't seem fair on the other 3 to be shut in til we get up (8am ish) when we know they like to be out and about at 4.30am during these so-called 'summer' months!

We are the noisey hen owner Christian !

We have to shut our eglu door. I have a kingsize duvet (to muffle sound) and dark camouflage tarpaulin draped over eglu to make it darker. We let our chickens out between 0645-7.30 am.

Ella is the noisey one, she is very dominant (it says in my chicken encyclopedia that one chicken adopts the cockerel characteristics), she is loud and very vocal, but has improved with the measures we've taken and it will only get better once Autumn/winter sets in.

Sorry to hear about Blanche, she would suit a home in the country where she can crow to her hearts content !! :D

Hester our butchest girl used to crow very loudly and very deeply quite early in the morning when she was laying - she's the most vocal of all of our girls despite being only second in command! But, as she's got older she's really mellowed and is much more relaxed and i don't really hear her any more. If you could cover the eglu and lock them in until later in the morning perhaps she'll grow out of it eventually anyway?

We could take her if you really can't keep her any longer. A couple of ours used to crow, but we find that our head chicken beats them up if they do this now (thank goodness!). Although I should warn you that ours stay in the cube with the door shut until I get up (around 7-8am) to avoid them disturbing the neighbours. Let me know if you'd like us to take her, but someone with a lovely country home might be able to help, which you might prefer :)

What a shame! My Blanche is quite noisy too ~(she's a pepperpot~) - but she is only noisy when we come out the back door or when we give her a treat. The rest of the time she's quiet as a mouse. I don't hear a murmur from mine at night in the eglu or in the morning until I open the door...even then they just head straight for the layers pellets. I have to say I've got well behaved chooks! At the mo they got to bed at 9.30 - 10pm and are allowed out between 7 & 8 in the morning. Usually nearer to 8am. At weekend I didn't let them out until 9.30am but when I did they didn't want to get up anyway. I am very lucky with my 3.

I want a white star for when I get my cube, but it is too far for me to come I'm afraid, plus I would have to shut her in the eglu until 8am, so she'd be crowing! I do like chuckling / clucky chooks - but I think if mine were constantly crowing, then they would have to learn a few hard lessons.............NO TREATS!

I do really hope you find her a good home.

Hi Rita & Mavis, I have tried PMing you three times now but they are just sitting in my outbox. I don't really want to give my email address out on the forum, although I don't think anyone would abuse it, hope you understand. I will keep trying and apologies if you do get three or four messages from me !

Hi,

I wish I could help, being so near & all, but I have grave doubts about introducing a newbie to my 5 big bullies :?

I was up at 4.30 this morning with one of the bantams having a bit of a crow, but luckily as they are so small it is only a fairly quiet noise

Let me know if you don't have any luck rehoming her- I might have a couple of ideas 8)
