LottyJ1
Hiya, Silly question but when people hang corn on the cob in runs do you cook them first or hang them raw? I have fed mine tinned sweetcorn but not on the cob yet. Just want to check the best way. As a tasty treat.
superkitty
I hang them raw, mine prefer them that way. They're being wormed at the moment so they keep looking wistfully at the empty corn on the cob holder
CheekyPekins
OK, silly question... But how do you hang the corn on the cob? Do you put a hole through it and hang it on string? I've given mine sweetcorn, but never hung it up
Jenthelibrarian
I am sooooooo glad that someone asked the cooked/raw question I was just too embarrassed to ask....
Ain't Nobody Here
I stick a metal BBQ skewer right through the middle with the hook at the top, and hang that off a bit of garden wire. I don't cook the sweetcorn first. Here are my girls demonstrating how to play Sweetcorn Swingball . (Click on the photo to play the video.) LottyJ1
Thanks everyone for the replies Here are my girls demonstrating how to play Sweetcorn Swingball . That video is fab Ain't "Ooops, word censored!"ody Here - they love it Glad i'm not the only one wondering this! I hang other veg in my WIR just using string from the roof so I will use that tied as tightly as I can - I do have two of the food balls from omlet which is great for small amounts of veg and you can buy fruit hangers from some suppliers. I have just been to tescos so I have two corn on the cob as they are on offer! Thanks again

Luvachicken
Loved the video. One thing I was wondering about is all the milky juice that comes out and goes on their feathers. Do they just wash it of when they have a dust bath ? Does it matter if it stays on them ?
Ain't Nobody Here
Can't say I ever noticed the juice on them - they probably clean it off each other .
good_egg
I bought sweet corn from tesco (on offer too) the other night. One pack for me and hubby and one for girls. Stuck a netting peg into it and hung it from the run, they totally ignored it! Really strange cos they get cabbage hung from their so know its a food place. Ended up taking down and putting on ground when they FR but they still ignored. Put mealworms on top and they ate them off. Even tried getting then to eat out of hand put they just pecked me slightly indignantly as if to say where's the real food. Cut the bits off in the end (got sweet corn all over coat). Tried the other cob cooked last night and they have hoovered it - nearly are the middle too. Will buy more and try cooked hung up as so want to watch! Guess my girls are fussy - typical! cd8jbr
I suspend cabbages and sweetcorn from the roof of the run too but I use the 'eye' from a hook and eye and I just screw it into the vegetable and have an S shaped hook hanging from the rope so you just put the eye over the hook and away you go. I've never had a problem with it and the hens seem to find the dangling veg good fun.
