SueChick
I have only just found a post on the advantages of using a good quality pellet on the amount of poo produced - I am a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't realise such a big difference in quality existed. I have been using the one that is made by Dodson and Hurrell (think spelt right!). Is this any good or is it one of the ones that should be avoided. I must admit my girls do seem to do A LOT of poos. Could someone advise me on this please?
sjp
it's a good brand but you just need to watch the sell by date
angeluk69
I use Dodson and Horrell and tbh not noticed any difference in poo production from the bag i got from the chicken farm which were seemingly unbranded. I buy D&H straight from their country store, and pay £8.50 for a 20kg bag, but have seen it priced and shelf labelled as a premium brand at £16.85 for the same size bag at other outlets!!! Personally I'm happy with the product and would recommend to anyone so I look forward to seeing what others recommend.
Jenthelibrarian
Another vote here for the Dodson & H. I have also had the 'Smallholder' brand and it's fine, not so keen on the Feathers & Beaky [or Beaky & Feathers? One of those] Don't the D&H bags have a Royal Warrant? If it's good enough for Her Maj's chooks then it's good enough for mine With only two hens I do buy the smallest bags of feed and have been wondering if anyone had tried setting up a local 'co-op' for sharing bulk buys? Maybe that's another thread.....
Bantambabe
I always have D&H - seems fine to me Last time I went I was seduced by a different D&H "posh" one "Adam Henson Layers Pellets" Have spent today itching after discovering this morning that the chicken food bin was crawling with tiny bugs that looked like walking flour and which had spread across the hall - Needless to say, have thrown the "posh" food away and vacuumed (and emptied the vacuum!) and scrubbed - eugh, my skin is still crawling. Food now being kept in the shed and I've gone back to the old faithful
Chortle Chook
If you want to reduce the amount of poos and make them a bit less runny then I'd recommend Garvo. There are quite a few Garvo fans on this forum and though it is a tad expensive it really does make poo picking that much easier. Also my chickens (and ducks, and doves) really do seem to like it. Eggasperated
Another Garvo fan here (even tho' we have to drive miles to get it).
jimnpaula
I used to feed Dodson & Horrell regularly until I found a supplier of Garvo very near to me. I prefer the smell of the Garvo pellets but am happy to go back to D&H occasionally if necessary. Do find the poos more smelly on the D&H though. Cheeky Chooky
Garvo is brilliant...far less poo, less smelly as well and the girls seem to love it
SueChick
Thx for that - think I will look for a local supplier then. Is it better to mix the two types together for a gradual changeover rather than abruptly change them?
Cheeky Chooky
I've never worried about changing foods gradually; I've only done it twice...but I just got on and did it All I can say is give it a go and see how they get on...I don't think they'll starve
Mrs_B
Another Garvo fan here (even tho' we have to drive miles to get it). Same here! I switched straight from Garvo Alphamix to Garvo Layers Mash and they weren't fussy. I find travelling very worth it, plus I like supporting the poulrty farmer we bought the chooks from who sells Garvo and various other items x
Chortle Chook
Oh who was that who sells Garvo in Glouscester? I get mine online from Newland Poutlry or Flyte so Fancy. I've found the pellets better than the Alphamix because with the latter my chickens just picked out the goody bits and left the rest.
