chocolatedog
Hi everyone - not been around for a while, but just thought I'd share with you something that happened today. Spice mark II has got an enlarged crop (but empty) for which I'm dosing her with liquid paraffin and massaging her crop....but as I caught her today to repeat her treatment, she let out a squawk as she usually does (she doesn't like being touched!) and Pepper mark II flew at me and pecked my arm!! She had the decency to look shamefaced afterwards, but has anyone else ever come across one hen actively defending another?! It was actually quite sweet, I think, as I can't interpret it any other way..... Edited July 23, 2012 by Guest
Ain't Nobody Here
Bet that hurt but that is quite sweet . Love the notion of a shame-faced chicken, I've never seen one .
Alis girls
Brass neck is how I'd describe a couple of my girls - quite apt when we are talking crops. if they were humans I think we wouldnt get on but because they are chickens despite their naughtiness i love em. chocolatedog
Today, Monday, I took her back to the vet as I felt there was no improvement and that 3 days of starvation and massage should have started to make a difference. He told me the crop was more distended and saggy than last week, and, after he had done an ultra-sound, that there was no muscle movement at all. He felt to give her Baytril to stop infection setting in would just prolong her life, but without any chance of the muscles springing back into shape. Bless her - her crop was so distended that she'd lost all the feathers on that area because of rubbing on the perch while roosting...... I feel really upset that I hadn't spotted the extent of her impacted crop earlier (both she and Ginger had impacted crop about a month - 2 months ago). Ginger is back to normal, but Spice being a bigger, fluffier bird it was hard to spot that it wasn't fully sorted...... Anyway, we felt it was right for her to be PTS. RIP Spice II my beautiful girl........

mimi5
Oh I really feel for you!!!BIG HUG! I had a very similiar experience with my lavender pekin Mary. I too didn't notice her crop was impacted and by the time I did and got her to the vet, despite their best efforts, in the end she also was PTS The vet was lovely and said that even if she had recovered she may never have been right and it could have been a genetic pre-disposition. (she was pooing so something was going through, but as she had started laying a few weeks before had gotten very thin) Still so sad to say goodbye and I really cried as I felt I should have noticed sooner....could have done something! Nature Chick
So sorry to hear about Spice. You have definately done the right thing, poor little Hattie had a similar problem a couple of years ago and she had surgery and medication and it ended the same way. Part of me feels guilty for putting her through the operation and that perhaps it would have been kinder to PTS earlier. We do what we think is right at the time.
